I will be making my 4th trip over in August and I have found staying in B&B's are ideal as they are local and are full of suggestions for the area.  Here are a couple links that are useful https://www.bandbireland.com/ and https://ireland-bnb.com/

James, Are we permitted to ask for lodging/restaurant recommendations...if we travel to Ireland? If Maureen goes in September, Elwyn, who lives in Antrim, might have ideas.  When we went last September, I might have made different arrangements.  But the closest location (North/East) we got to was lodgings around Raphoe/Stranalor- otherwise we were near Donegal town and Sligo.  Just thought I'd ask. All the best! Valerie

I looked forward to following up on your suggestions.  We are planning a visit to the area in September.
Gratefully,

Maureen,   Griffiths Valuation 1859 lists Thomas Donaldson in Tullynure. He had plot 55 which was a 15 acre farm which he shared with James Donaldson.    https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml   This looks to be Thomas’s death in 1891, aged 84. His wife had died before that.   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1891/06084/4735831.pdf   Possible deaths for Thomas’s wife are Nancy 1866 aged 64, Catherine 1864 aged 54, Ally 1865 aged 46.  Those deaths are not viewable free and if you want to see the details you need to pay £2.50 a time on the GRONI site.   James Donaldson died in 1886 aged 78. He was a bachelor. He was Thomas’s brother. Interestingly the informant for the death was a Charles McCann of Caneese. Perhaps a relation of Thomas McCann who married Hannah?   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1886/06236/4785205.pdf   From PRONI wills site:   Probate abstract. Letters of Administration of the personal estate of James Donaldson late of Tullynure County Londonderry Farmer who died 10 November 1886 at same place were granted at Londonderry to Thomas Donaldson of Tullynure Farmer the Brother.   1831 census of Tullynure lists a Robert Donaldson whose family consisted of 3 males and 7 females. All Church of Ireland. At a guess, Robert may be Thomas & James father.   http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1831/Londonderry/Loughinsholin/Lissane/Tullynine/61/   No Donaldsons in Tullynure by the 1901 census.   1901 census of Caneese lists a Charles McCann, aged 70, farming. Family was Roman Catholic. So that’s probably the Charles who was the informant for  James’ death.    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Londonderry/Lisson_Upper/Canuse/1533836/   In 1831 there was a John McCann in Caneese. A total of 4 males, 4 females, all RC. 2 families living under the one roof:   http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1831/Londonderry/Loughinsholin/Lissane/Caneese/12/   1827 Tithe applotment records list 2 Donaldson and 1 McCanny family farming in Caneese:   Tithe Applotment Books 1823-1838: Lissan Parish, county Tyrone

Caneese and Tullynure share a common boundary so the McCann and Donaldson families lived very close to each other.  Just a few hundred yards between the two properties.   Lissan RC baptism & marriage records are complete from 1839 onwards. Between 1822 and 1838, some fragments have survived.   So the Donaldsons from Tullynure appear to have been Church of Ireland, not Presbyterian and the McCanns/McCarrons appear to have been Roman Catholic.  Yet you say the family was Presbyterian in the US. Either they switched lanes somewhere or perhaps it’s not the right family.   Hope the above helps a little.     Elwyn

Hello!

I am so happy to have found this site!
I am trying to push back on my husband's 2 xgreat-grandfather.
Thomas Kearnan (1840 - 1884) is buried in Port Byron, NY USA.  According to US Census records, Thomas was born in Ireland
He was married to Hannah Donaldson (1840 - 1912) who was born in Ireland.  The family in NY were Presbyterian so we suspect they were from the North.
I have a marriage record of a Hannah Donaldson and a Thomas McCann (?) on February 23, 1860 from Tullynane at the Parish Church at the Parish of Lissan.
Thomas's father was listed as William McCann.  Hannah's father was listed as Thomas Donaldson.
A Thomas and Hannah McCarron (McCannon?) traveled to NY via Liverpool on the Nottebahm arriving in 1863.  It looks like they had a daughter, Sarah, born on the ship who died before they docked.
I can find no records connecting Thomas and Hannah on the ship to the Thomas and Hannah who ended up in Port Byron, NY.
I do have a Civil War Pension card in which Hannah Kearnan is claiming the pension of "Thomas McCarl alias Thomas Kearnan" which makes me think that somewhere along the way Thomas changed his last name.
Any leads or insights would be appreciated.  Thank you!
Maureen Kearnan
