James,
Thank you for responding.
In my line - Gilbert Cathcart married Margaret Steele (Steill) about 1765. He was from Spring Lane Farm, County Derry, Ireland. I’m not aware of any direct-line Cathcarts from County Fermanagh.

Subject: [CoTyroneMailingList] Help with ancestral sites County Tyrone
I am looking for someone who can help me pinpoint ancestral sites in County Tyrone and County Derry for an upcoming trip in Fall 2022.
Surnames are Cathcart, Marshall, Alexander, Cousley, Steele
My Great, great grandfather John Marshall Cathcart was born in either Cookstown or Pomeroy March 11, 1842. He came to United States about 1860. His parents are Gabriel Cathcart (born 1817) and Hester Marshall Cathcart (born 1818). Hester’s widowed mother, Letitia Marshall, was an innkeeper in Pomeroy in 1839. Gabriel Cathcart was living near Magherafelt in 1839 when he and Hester Marshall married. The Cathcart, Cousley, and Steele families are also associated with Springlane Farm, Ballymuckleheany, County Derry.
Sarah Alexander, my great great grandmother, born in either Pomeroy or Belfast, joined a brother or uncle in the United States. There she married John Marshall Cathcart.
Is there a local person who can help me with local sites? Connections with cousins would be a bonus.
Thank you

Boyd,
I want to see if I can locate the inn that the Marshall family had in Pomeroy in 1839.
As well as the home Gabriel and Hester Marshall Cathcart lived in from perhaps their marriage in 1839 to I don’t know when.
Perhaps I don’t have a complete understanding of what the Griffiths Valuation tells me.
I’d like to see if we can locate Spring Lane Farm, County Derry as well as The Grange. These are mentioned in two family narratives. These documents are typed and probably have been transcribed from handwritten documents written in 1934 and 1907. So the place name spellings might be incorrect.
Three Cathcart brothers came to Ireland - possibly in 1611
1 - One brother settled at Glen Leary near Coleraine; this was rented land
William Cathcart, cousin of James Cathcart (son of Gilbert and Margaret married 1765) rented the land at the “time of his cousin James”
“last of the Glen Leary Cathcarts”, Nancy Cathcart was living there in 1883 and lived at the “old house”
2 - another brother at Ballybay, County Monaghan - “nothing is known of the Ballybay Cathcarts"
3 - Another brother at the Grange near Maghearfelt – This is my direct line - - John Cathcart had 3 sons. Gilbert and two others. The two unnamed sons inherited the Grange. Gilbert purchased Spring Lane Farm in about 1765 when he married Margaret Steele - See notes below about The Grange and Spring Lane Farm
There’s a cemetery with Cathcart “kin” at Kilcrone Glen [is this Kilcronaghan?] near Tobermore, County Derry (Is this the Kilcronaghan Parish Churchyard?)
Spring Lane Farm, near Magherafelt, County Derry
A family narrative in my possession says Gilbert Cathcart bought Spring Lane Farm about 1765 when he married Margaret Steele (Skiel/Skill/Steil) Spring Lane is near Magherafelt and had 35 Irish acres. The house supposedly predated the Cathcarts, perhaps back to 1611
The Grange
Gilbert Cathcart’s parents and uncles had the Grange. As of 1883 Samuel Cathcart of Belfast still owned half the Grange property and Samuel’s sister was living there. The other half of the Grange was inherited by Marie Cathcart, a niece of Gilbert Cathcart. A daughter of Marie’s was living there in 1883.
So - that’s what I’m trying to locate. Thank you to all the kind people who have responded. I think it’s time I explore hiring someone to help me pursue this further.
Thanks for everyone’s help.

Julia,
Youare looking for Spring Lane Farm.
GriffithsValuation (1859) lists 2 Cathcart farms in Ballymuckleheaney. _Plot 9was James Cathcart with 29 acres and plot 10 was Gabriel with 22.Plot 9 contains Spring Lane Cottage. It’s shown on the Griffithsmaps. So I would guess that plot 9 was Spring Lane farm.
The2 farms are on either side of the modern A31 Magherafelt Rd. Accessto plot 9 is from that road and access to plot 10 is from theMoneymore Rd. There are still farms there today.

Julia,
The information you possess re. your family is very detailed and
predates records generally referred to by family historians. Perhaps
the records of the Registry of Deeds in Dublin could be essential to
your research and offer proof to support recollections of previous
generations?
I have had a quick look at the 1631 Muster Rolls of Ulster and there
are no Cathcarts recorded in either Cos Londonderry or Tyrone.

You are looking for Spring Lane Farm.
Griffiths Valuation (1859) lists 2 Cathcart farms in Ballymuckleheaney. _Plot 9 was James Cathcart with 29 acres and plot 10 was Gabriel with 22. Plot 9 contains Spring Lane Cottage. It’s shown on the Griffiths maps. So I would guess that plot 9 was Spring Lane farm.
The 2 farms are on either side of the modern A31 Magherafelt Rd. Access to plot 9 is from that road and access to plot 10 is from the Moneymore Rd. There are still farms there today.

Julia,
Have referred to the Co Londonderry Flaxseed Bounty Lists (Spinning
Wheel Premiums) of 1796 and find GILBERT CATHCART recorded in
Desertlyn parish and JOHN & WILLIAM CATHCART residing in Desertmartin
parish (both parishes adjoin Magherafelt). Also, WILLIAM KITHCART is
recorded in Macosquin parish which adjoins Coleraine parish.
Disappointingly the Flaxseed lists do not recorded the resident
townlands of the recipients of the wheels, only the parish and the
number of wheels awarded.
Trust this is interesting,

[CoTyroneMailingList] Re: Help with ancestral sites County Tyrone
Boyd,
I want to see if I can locate the inn that the Marshall family had
in Pomeroy in 1839.
As well as the home Gabriel and Hester Marshall Cathcart lived in
from perhaps their marriage in 1839 to I don’t know when.
Perhaps I don’t have a complete understanding of what the Griffiths
Valuation tells me.
I’d like to see if we can locate Spring Lane Farm, County Derry as
well as The Grange. These are mentioned in two family narratives.
These documents are typed and probably have been transcribed from
handwritten documents written in 1934 and 1907. So the place name
spellings might be incorrect.
Three Cathcart brothers came to Ireland - possibly in 1611
1 - One brother settled at Glen Leary near Coleraine; this was rented
land
William Cathcart, cousin of James Cathcart
(son of Gilbert and Margaret married 1765) rented the land at the
“time of his cousin James”
“last of the Glen Leary Cathcarts”, Nancy Cathcart was living
there in 1883 and lived at the “old house”
2 - another brother at Ballybay, County Monaghan - “nothing is
known of the Ballybay Cathcarts"
3 - Another brother at the Grange near Maghearfelt – This is my
direct line - - John Cathcart had 3 sons. Gilbert and two others. The
two unnamed sons inherited the Grange. Gilbert purchased Spring Lane
Farm in about 1765 when he married Margaret Steele - See notes below
about The Grange and Spring Lane Farm
There’s a cemetery with Cathcart “kin” at Kilcrone Glen [is
this Kilcronaghan?] near Tobermore, County Derry (Is this the
Kilcronaghan Parish Churchyard?)
Spring Lane Farm, near Magherafelt, County Derry
A family narrative in my possession says Gilbert Cathcart bought
Spring Lane Farm about 1765 when he married Margaret Steele
(Skiel/Skill/Steil) Spring Lane is near Magherafelt and had 35 Irish
acres. The house supposedly predated the Cathcarts, perhaps back to
1611
The Grange
Gilbert Cathcart’s parents and uncles had the Grange. As of 1883
Samuel Cathcart of Belfast still owned half the Grange property and
Samuel’s sister was living there. The other half of the Grange was
inherited by Marie Cathcart, a niece of Gilbert Cathcart. A daughter
of Marie’s was living there in 1883.
So - that’s what I’m trying to locate. Thank you to all the kind
people who have responded. I think it’s time I explore hiring
someone to help me pursue this further.
Thanks for everyone’s help.

Thank you
Julia Holton Todd,
Kirkland, Washington, USA
