About 10 days ago I center punched a deer in the mountains as I entered a
turn. Not fast...maybe 35-40mph, Saw it on my left and hit the brakes a
little to scrub off a bit of speed as it accelerated across the pavement at
the same time. I stood the bike up as quickly as I could and hit it
squarely. Every bit of beautiful bodywork except the small covers below the
seat were splintered. Bike had never been down and nothing was scratched
up. Fender was removed and the critter wrapped around both sides of the
bike, smacking my left calf rather painfully. Probably 120-140lb, near as I
could tell.
Did not go down, however. The bodywork is getting nearly impossible to
find. I need to locate the left mid fairing and the grey duct. I have the
upper and I have an ST4s right hand mid.
All in all, it wasn't my time yet. My friend Steve was following me and
witnessed the collision. It shook him up a bit. His first words after asking
me how I felt, was to say he could not believe I didn't go down. I steered
directly into the deer, because if I had hit him at an angle, I would have
gone down into a ravine and hit a lot of trees, sort of like a pinball
machine.
Stay alert, my friends. I was fortunate, injury wise.

Good to hear Jack, sorry about the bodywork, if I hear of something I'll let you know.
My encounter was at a little under 80 on a blind hill, 215' on the pavement but I was wearing leather, so not much damage, broke collar bone the BMW(K75 with Pichler full fairing) was totaled. I hit it at an angle trying to avoid and the front end tucked at impact, but I still wonder if I hit it straight on if I would have gone over the bars. - Gene

Thanks, Gene. It was a tight turn, hence the speed. My arms and shoulders
were tender for several days after, from just the impact while holding the
bars in a death grip to avoid them crossing up.
You were a very fortunate man to survive at that speed, my friend.

A friend of mine had a very similar incident about 50 feet in front of me a
couple days after taking delivery of his brand new 1991 CBR600F2 - managed
not to drop it but not much of the GooF2 or the deer came through
unscathed. I had bits of fur and er, stuff, all over my bike and
faceshield, ick!
Lucky guy, glad you were too!

Ah shit! Glad you’re still with us Jack!
Jack, happy you’re able to write about your experience. We’re just over one year since my son killed a buck while on my ST1300. Totaled the bike-he should have been totaled as well, but it wasn’t his time. Can’t imagine what James and you other deer punchers felt during the brief period just prior to impact. Lucky folks, all of you.

My deer encounter was at a slow speed. Having already seen 3 deer on my
dusk time ride home on a country road, I was going maybe 20 mph when
suddenly there was a deer directly in front of my bike with a very shocked
expression on its face. I had no time to react; hit the deer in a glancing
blow and went down . Deer took care of the left side front fairing, road
took care of the right side. Deer disappeared. A passing motorist helped me
get the bike back on 2, and I limped it home, only realizing I had no front
brake when I got to a downhill section, and no headlight as I got home. As
dangerous as the freeway alternative is to that route, I will never go on
that road at dusk. I went back the next morning (in a car) and looked for
the deer in case I had dealt it a grave or mortal or blow. No sign anywhere
near.
Stay safe my friends.
