Hello Listers,

When compiling this file I was intrigued by the considerable number of hedge schools in Taughboyne, a parish with a large Presbyterian population. I incorrectly assumed that such schools was where Catholics achieved an education and was surprised that it was not only Catholics  who were subject to penal laws, but also Presbyterians. Upon reading “Hedge Schools in Ireland“ this aspect of Irish history was clarified and I requested Jim McKane to include this item in the CTI archives www.cotyroneireland.com/schools/hedge.htmlhttp://www.cotyroneireland.com/schools/hedge.html
Hoping you find this enlightening and regards,

It is fascinating history.
Around the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Catholics and Presbyterians made common cause as they were both excluded from the establishment.

And a number of the ring leaders who were captured and spared hanging by
being transported to the then New South Wales, where they tried to
further their cause with around 600 other convicts, in an abortive
uprising in Castle Hill towards Parramatta (Now Suburbs of Greater
Sydney), early the next century. The uprising failed.
