Hi.  Could
someone lead me in the right direction please.

I am forwarding
this email asking for some assistance please.

William Dick (1774
– 1849), his wife Esther Taylor and their (6) six children, form Tyrone
County
and migrated to Australia.

James b 1815,
Robert b 1819, Martha b 1822, Elizabeth b 1823, Sarah Jane
b 1825 & Thomas b 1829 / 1830

Having been through
your website, of searching for William Dick, Esther Taylor and family, I
did
manage to locate 2 of his children’s baptism details with one of his
children
showing a year different to what is shown in Ancestry.

William’s
occupation - a weaver and they lived in Claggan, Dungannon in Co Tyrone.

I discovered in the
Trove website (Australia) that William had a younger brother named
Samuel (1793
– 1846) from Cookstown who was sent to Australia in 1818 as a convict
for rape
and abduction in Antrim, Ireland.   With the information I have
obtained of the court transcript in Ireland and his coroner’s inquest in
Sydney, I also discovered that a sibling named Jane was placed in a
Lunatic
Asylum later in life in Northern Ireland and there were 2 other brothers
that
are not accounted for.

I would appreciate
if someone can assist me in locating details of the Lunatic Asylum, the
2 other
Dick siblings that lived in Northern Ireland, the location and date of
marriage
for William & Esther and the rest of the children.   I
believe William Dick’s parents came from Scotland and travelled to
Northern
Ireland but do not know where to Look.

Thanking you

Colin

Hello Colin,
Before rushing off to Fb, it is necessary to have undertaken all possible research previously (which you have made a great start), but it is wise to appraise yourself of a thorough knowledge of all aspects of your interesting research to avoid rushed and speculative responses.
SAMUEL DICK’S long, involved and convoluted court case was held at the Antrim Assizes, Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim, on March 21 and fully reported in press (Saunders’ News Letter, Dublin, March 26 1818)
ELIZABETH CROCKETT was abducted from Stewartstown, Co Tyrone by her relative Samuel Dick and subsequently raped. Reading the report, it appears that several relatives of both parties may have been implicated.
Regards sister JANE and unnamed siblings they may be locatable using the civil registration records (free to download) on Irishgenealogy https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/
Civil registration of Irish Marriages (non Catholic) commenced 1845 and all births, marriages and deaths date from 1864. Searching for Dick deaths should be relatively simple as Dick families were not so prolific.
Asylum records will have been transferred to PRONI, Belfast so a search of the website will be worthwhile Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) | nidirecthttps://www.nidirect.gov.uk/campaigns/public-record-office-northern-ireland-proni The Belfast Lunatic Asylum closed in 1913.
You state that you have located baptisms of some family members; would this be from the transcribed registers of Derryloran Parish Church on CTI? William and Esther’s marriage is not recorded in Derryloran and may be impossible to locate (such is the situation in Ireland). Marriages generally took place in the bride’s church. There are no general indexes for pre-civil registration records. Registers were often tardily maintained or not at all and the 1922 destruction of the old Record Office in Dublin further compounded the sad situation. A complete list of surviving church records for all Ulster parishes compiled by the staff of PRONI may be found here https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/publications/guide-church-records
Hope this is useful and perhaps Elwyn Soutter may have further to offer or clarify?
Trusting this is useful?
