You should probably ask this question on the Bevelheads chat list. But I
am on it and I used to have a Darmah and I have worked on them and keep an
eye on them. It's a very hard question that you have asked for a number of
reasons. A stock original and well kept Darmah that is a good rider is very
very rare beast these days. A good running and well kept one is probably
worth about what Vicki has stated at around $8,000 US. It's very hard to
come up with comparables as they pretty much don't exist. They are out
there but come up very rarely. But let's just say $8,000-$10,000 isn't an
unreasonable price. Most of the one's that do come up are rat bikes and
they have been abused and when those come up on Ebay the sellers seem to
think they are worth heaps more than they are, asking is in the $6,000 to
$8,000 range and they don't bring any bids.

Darmah's have some serious faults that have to be considered before you
go and buy one. If the desmo valves aren't kept in proper adjustment then
things are going to wear and it's going to be expensive to get them back to
right. The rear cush drive bolts sheared on them. If they haven't been
looked after and loctited you will have problems. And the worst problem of
all is that the big ends on the crank tend to fail early. It's not uncommon
for them to be bad by 20,000 miles. And when they go you have really
expensive and complicated work to do on them. Think in the $5,000 range to
get them fixed, and good luck finding someone who can take them apart and
get that done. I did one two years ago for a guy and it wasn't fun. Very
few folks are out there who know what to do on them.

They aren't my favorite Beveldrive Ducati as I said, I owned one back in
the day. The 860 motors are over stressed and the big end failures is a
very real issue. You'd be a lot happier getting a Roundcase 750, I know I
am, I have three of them now and prices on them are down these days.

Thank you Tom.

Great information.  I have access to an  excellent restorative motorcycle  mechanic, but even with that, your points support my decision to leave this one alone.

Thanks again,

Staton
