land sold at public auction

Hello all.
My great uncle Thomas Henry Morrison (last on the family farm in Loughterush, Kilskeery Parish), a bachelor for life, died without a will in 1970. His estate was settled in court and the family farm was sold at public auction as part of that process. Several family descendants, including my mother, received  checks for a small amount from the proceeds. One local fellow I spoke with recalled that he thought there had been  a total of 17 family descendants who received such checks. The amounts were so small that the total amount dispersed could not have been much more than around $3300.00 (this was a 40 acre farm). I am very curious as to the details of that probate settlement ... my guess is that Uncle Tommy must have had some substantial outstanding debt, or else the lawyers did some serious feasting.
At any rate, I have not found a way to research this settlement or details of the public sale, and am wondering if anyone here has any tips or leads that might help.
Thanks in advance.

Rick,

When someone dies intestate, the normal arrangement is that someone with an interest in the estate applies to the Probate Court to have an executor (administrator) appointed. That person is then required to wind up the estate in accordance with intestacy law. That might be a solicitor or it could be a relation or other acceptable person.

Normally there is a probate file created which ends up in PRONI. Have you searched for such a file there? (It’s too recent to be on-line and would involve a search of the will calendars which are kept in the main public search room). The probate file should record the detail & value of the deceased’s estate, together with any other debts and liabilities, and who the eligible beneficiaries were.

PRONI is closed at present due to COVID but when it re-opens you could search there, or get a researcher to do it for you.

Thanks Elwyn!
I don't know when I'll be back in NI even after the PRONI offices reopen. Maybe I could get lucky and have someone try to find that file for me. You may or may not recall from my previously posted questions that I have been working on a book about our Morrison ancestors (just for family), and this topic of how the Morrisons' time in Loughterush came to an end after 200-300 years on the place is of particular significance. (ironically, only one generation after being finally able to actually own the farm!)
I have also, without luck, been trying to get an idea of what farm land values were in the 1970s in CT. Any help with that would also be greatly appreciated.
Merry Christmas!

Rick,

I scoured an on-line newspapers site for land prices in Tyrone in the 1970s. Many farms are advertised but the adverts were coy about what price was being sought. The best I could come up with was an article in the Drogheda Independent on 15th September 1972 which said that in Co. Meath agricultural land was fetching between £700 - £800 per acre. Tyrone would likely have been to the same.

I bought an acre of agricultural land in Co Antrim in about 1989. The price then was about £3000, but there were several bidders and it may have gone for a bit more than the average price at that time.

Elwyn On Tuesday, 22 December 2020, 20:31:11 GMT, Rick Smoll via CoTyroneList <cotyronelist@list.cotyroneireland.com> wrote: Hello all.
