Similar story.  My RD400 seizes during a morning track day session at the
Oak Hill Racetrack in Henderson, Texas, causing me to go over the
handlebars and do a three point landing, breaking my left wrist on impact.
My friend Chris (R.I.P.), in whose Datsun pick-up truck we have driven the
250 miles from Austin, tells me he's paid for the entire day and I can
either be taken to the hospital in Henderson (not recommended) or wait
until he's ready to go home.  Around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, he calls it
quits and we load up and head back, stopping at every convenience store on
the way to add fresh ice to the chest in which I've been keeping my hand
and swollen wrist.  At my house he did unload my bike and gear into my
garage before he headed home.  Fortunately for me, nighttime traffic was
light and the Seton ER was less than 3 miles from my house, but driving my
'90 300ZX there and parking it weren't the easiest things to do.  What I
remember most about my time in the ER was having to listen to some guy
bitch about having cut his hand while slicing a bagel and the pain he was
in.  Talk about a whiner.  The wrist was surgically repaired the next day
and an external fixator screwed into one of the bones in my lower arm, but
even now, on a quiet night, I can hear the wrist crack and pop when I turn
or twist it.

If Crutchfield or MM are even thinking they'll be ready to race in a week
or two, I tip my Arai to them both.

STeve is being modest.  Screw the work situation, let me tell you the real
story.

We're racing minis in a 4 hour endurance race.  Steve gets taken out by a
wanker, and busts said collarbone.  He's sitting in the ambulance, they
know it's broken, he knows it's broken, but hell no, he ain't going to the
Millville NJ hospital.  So this sick son of a bitch convinces them to let
him out of the ambulance, and he comes back to the pits, clearly in pain.
Downs like 6 advil, a bottle of gatorade and asks us to help him pack up
his van.

So we do - and this crazy ass bald mofo decides he's going to drive the 3.5
hours BACK home in northern NJ to go to HIS hospital for xrays etc.  BUT,
as we're loading him into his van with all his stuff, he opts to stop to
break out a bratwurst he was saving for lunch - with some mustard of course

  • for the ride.

THEN he figures out he can only drive with one of his arms, so he's got a
conundrum, being the brat is large and messy.  So, he alternates between
driving with his knees, taking bites, chewing the brat while holding the
remainder in his lips so he can course correct with his good arm.

I mean, it wasn't exactly a good time, but it's an epic memory and a great
story etched in my memory forever.

I broke my humerus back in 1985 when I target fixated on the outside of a corner on my VF500 Interceptor.  When I tried to get out of the gully I was lying in, I tried to raise my left arm to grab a reed to pull myself up.  Only my upper arm moved while the rest just laid there on the ground.  I thought I severed it.  But I looked down at my jacket and the sleeve was still intact so I assumed my arm was still in one piece. I had to reach over with my right hand to pick up my left hand off the ground.  I didn't have surgery, they just snapped the two bones back together and put an immobilizing brace on it.  It still felt like a wet noodle.  I had to sleep sitting up.  About a month later I foolishly tried to carry a small bag of groceries with that arm and the pain dropped me to my knees.  I understand Marc has the best doctors and his arm is plated and screwed while I had neither of those but good God...how he can even contemplate racing this weekend is insane.

I had a huge accident back in '98 in which I broke (shattered to smithereens is the more apt description) my left wrist, left scapula, two left ribs, right ankle, right thumb and forefinger, and had to get nine stitches over my left eye.  I thought I was done riding and indeed I didn't ride for two years.  But the pull was too strong and of course I was back on my bikes.

Some of you may also remember that I had a crash in 2012 in which I broke my collarbone and I came on this forum and declared that I was done riding.  Hearing my kids ask my wife "is Daddy going to die?"  was too much for me to take at the time.  I really did think I was done that time.  Maybe I'm stupid, naïve, or willfully stubborn, but if that last one in 2012 didn't keep me off bikes, I don't know what will.

Anyway, the three most painful moments in my life were; a bone marrow biopsy of my hip back in the mid '80s,  when they set my wrist after the '98 accident, and laying on the ground with that broken collarbone.  I was flabbergasted when JL99 broke his collarbone and raced 3 days later.  Completely out of the realm of possibility.  But now...if MM93 races, or even rides a lap, this weekend, that will surpass my astonishment at JL99's feat.

I hope Marc, Cal, and Alex get fit as soon as possible but I also hope they don't come back before they can absolutely compete with no danger to themselves or their fellow competitors.  Anymore than usual that is.

Mario
