Hello friends

I don’t suppose any of you have a record of the passenger list for the ship
Parisian, which departed Liverpool for Quebec, arriving on the 28th May
1882 please?

I’m looking for two female relatives, Elizabeth and Mary Jane Semple which
I think may have been on there.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, kind regards,

Jane Hudson nee Semple.

Hi Jane —

The ship, Parisian, with two young sisters on board raised an immediate
flag with me as it was one of the ones chartered by Barnardo's of London to
transport unwanted children (British Home Children, or BHCs) to work off
indentures in Canada. My own great-grandfather, James Henry Gray — older
than most BHCs at the time at age 19 — was sent to Canada aboard the
Parisian in 1890 to work in the Barnardo's Industrial Farm School in
Russell, Manitoba.

If the two sisters were aboard the Parisian, they were mostly likely BHCs
and in that case, you may be in luck. Barnardo's still exists and kept
extensive files and photographs of the children. It took two years to order
and get a thick file with photos of James with information on his sisters,
but it was invaluable. If it wasn't Barnardo's that sent them over in the
BHC scheme, it might've been one of the other charities like Waifs & Strays
but Parisian was a frequent Barnardo's charter.

Sure enough, I did find the Parisian's passenger list with one of the
sisters for that date on one of Canada's Home Children databases, Home
Children, 1869-1932
https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/home-children-1869-1930/pages/home-children.aspx.
They must have been BHCs, likely sent over to work off indentures as
domestics in the eastern provinces. Most of the younger girls arrived at
the Hazelbrae home for processing and training in Ontario.

Database: "Passenger Lists for the Port Of Quebec City and other Ports,
1865-1922. There are other passenger lists in that government Home Children
website you might check out for Mary Jane to see if she was on another
voyage with the Parisian, or on another Barnardo's chartered sister ship.
(Bavarian, Numidian, Sardinian, etc.)

Elizabeth Semple is here:
https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/passenger-lists/passenger-lists-quebec-port-1865-1900/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=87965&

Much more information can be found at the private Canadian charity, Home
Children Canada https://www.britishhomechildren.com/. While the sisters
are not currently in their registry, they could be added when you get more
info as it's confirmed in the Canadian government database that at least
Elizabeth was sent over in the BHC program. That charity site will have
more info on Barnardo's research dept., "Family History Service (UK, Canada
and Australia)" to see what the wait and cost is these days to order their
files as the oldest living relative.

Good luck!

Fascinating. Misguided philanthropy! By chance, I've just been looking into the Ragged Schools, one of which in Est London had Thomas Barnardo as a benefactor.

You're welcome! I'm very glad to help. Jane has contacted me now and is now
on the hunt for the girls. She'll have a lot of help out there; as Ian
says, it was misguided philanthropy that exploited those kids. But if
someone has young relatives who disappeared from family trees in the late
19th c. and early 20th and popped up later in the Commonwealth nations via
DNA traces, you might check the BHC databases for them. I'm not going to
get into the really unpleasant aspects of the government scheme here on
this list; you can imagine all the ways this went terribly wrong. This
isn't the place for that discussion, much as you can wind me up and I can
surely deliver the details, especially about my own great-grandfather.

But for family researchers who haven't heard of the BHC scheme before now,
please look it up and just know there's a wealth of information out there
now on these children, including vital stats on their poor families back
home in the British Isles, unavailable anywhere else except for the barest
info in the censuses.

Parisian in 1890 to work in the Barnardo's Industrial Farm School in
Russell, Manitoba.

If the two sisters were aboard the Parisian, they were mostly likely
BHCs and in that case, you may be in luck.

Database: "Passenger Lists for the Port Of Quebec City and other Ports,
1865-1922. There are other passenger lists in that government Home Children
website you might check out for Mary Jane to see if she was on another
voyage with the Parisian, or on another Barnardo's chartered sister
ship. (Bavarian, Numidian, Sardinian, etc.)

Elizabeth Semple is here:

https://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/passenger-lists/passenger-lists-quebec-port-1865-1900/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=87965&

Much more information can be found at the private Canadian charity, Home
Children Canada https://www.britishhomechildren.com/. While the sisters
are not currently in their registry, they could be added when you get more
info as it's confirmed in the Canadian government database that at least
Elizabeth was sent over in the BHC program. That charity site will have
more info on Barnardo's research dept., "Family History Service (UK,
Canada and Australia)" to see what the wait and cost is these days to
order their files as the oldest living relative.

Good luck!

Hello friends

I don’t suppose any of you have a record of the passenger list for the
ship Parisian, which departed Liverpool for Quebec, arriving on the 28th
May 1882 please?

I’m looking for two female relatives, Elizabeth and Mary Jane Semple which
I think may have been on there.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, kind regards,

Jane Hudson nee Semple.

You're welcome! I'm very glad to help. Jane has contacted me now and is now on the hunt for the girls. She'll have a lot of help out there; as Ian says, it was misguided philanthropy that exploited those kids. But if someone has young relatives who disappeared from family trees in the late 19th c. and early 20th and popped up later in the Commonwealth nations via DNA traces, you might check the BHC databases for them. I'm not going to get into the really unpleasant aspects of the government scheme here on this list; you can imagine all the ways this went terribly wrong. This isn't the place for that discussion, much as you can wind me up and I can surely deliver the details, especially about my own great-grandfather. But for family researchers who haven't heard of the BHC scheme before now, please look it up and just know there's a wealth of information out there now on these children, including vital stats on their poor families back home in the British Isles, unavailable anywhere else except for the barest info in the censuses. — Holly On Thu, Feb 20, 2025 at 9:46 AM Pat Hocker via CoTyroneList < cotyronelist@list.cotyroneireland.com> wrote: > Yes, I also appreciated your detailed reply, Holly, even though I have no > Bernardo ancestors.
