JJ Cale often flew under the radar, while many of his songs became major hits for other stars, including two songs from this album.  (Eric Clapton with “After Midnight” and Lynyrd Skynyrd with “Call Me the Breeze”).  “Naturally”, his debut, was released in 1971, and showcases his trademark shuffle topped off with laidback lyrics. Generations of musicians have cited JJ Cale in general, and this album in particular, as an influence. It’s a stone classic.

Cale’s agent told him that if he would only appear on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand to perform his song “Crazy Mama”, also on this album, he’d have a Top Ten hit on his hands. He refused to appear because he didn’t want to lip-sync the song.

Not to be missed is the track “Magnolia”, three and a half minutes of quiet meditation on love and longing. This song alone has been covered by dozens of artists, from Jose Feliciano to Iron and Wine.
