Hi folks, contrary to popular belief, not all Irish emigrants were destined to North America - the Australian colonies offered free passages from the late 1830s and it is possible that emigrant siblings could be found in both North America and Australia

Here, here Len!

Definitely in my grandfather’s family.  He came to Oz his brother to NYC, and some siblings stayed in Ireland. While we have known for several years that this brother existed and had traced his marriage his wife and his children in USA, they had no concept that there could be family in Australia. Imagine trying to find the needle in the NYC haystack of someone named Patrick McCormack!! But we did it!

And while the journey to Oz was both long and difficult, especially in comparison to iron with the journey to East Coast USA, there was much to gain from a government desperate for free settlers. Where the Irish in NYC in particular were considered the lowest of the low where work and accommodation were concerned and faced the endless “No Irish” signs everywhere, in Australia they were able to access land and apply their rural skills to conquer a vastly different landscape.  It was amazingly hard work but they often gathered people from their local community in Ireland around them and pulled together! There were big contrasts in acceptance between the two countries. I think the many many Irish in my family thought themselves lucky as they slowly built families and comfort around themselves.

Keep up the good work guys

The history of the Irish in Australia is interesting too. Most Irish
immigrants came to the southern states and not all were welcome. Many
job ads had "No Irish" and "Irish need not apply", and that attitude
persisted into the 20thC. Most women got jobs as domestics or children's
nanny and the men were simply labourers or ended up in the Police Force
(hence the Eureka rebellion and the Beachworth riots against brutal
Irish Police). And why so many in the Police? Because other able-bodied
men were off digging for gold and the Police Force was the only work
Irish could get, irrespective of their skills or training. Newspapers of
the day carried cartoons which typified the Irish as lazy and stupid.
Legislation has changed that but some attitudes still linger.

On a more happy note, my Irish ancestor migrated to North America and
joined the Union army. On discharge, he acquired land in Nebraska and
grew ... wait for it  ... potatoes of course! A pioneer settler of the
region he was given 9 months credit from the local store until his crops
came in. Not many places these days would extend credit for that length
of time. And to an Irish man too!!! He was recognised as a pioneer
settler of Polk county and has a memorial to him there. So ... not all
Irish were labelled dumb.

And don’t forget about New Zealand, where some of my Ulster Irish ended up! In the early 1840’s they were mainly traders, whalers, sealers and ex soldiers, then like my Henrys, skipped over from Australia to follow the gold, set up hotels and make the most of the coaching business. Free passage was initially only offered to the literate, so numbers were small as passage was expensive. And of course New Zealand didn’t take this undesirable convicts!
Cheers

Ahh yes our Kiwis!

Verity your little dig at the convicts made me snort into my cuppa!

Didn’t know they demanded literacy for your lot, but that meant you didn’t get the ones who were used to the REALLY hard work!

And might I add Ms Cheeky Kiwi, convict descendants now consider themselves genealogical royalty in Australia. See what you missed out on over the ditch? Not that I’m in the royalty ranks! My lot were just sometimes illiterate farmers but they were pioneers all the same.

And yes one of my great uncles travelled across that ditch for the gold rush and vowed he would never cross it again. So we’ve got some real Kiwi Cousins now! We’re all in it together!

Cheers and waving across that ditch

Glad I triggered the old NZ/Aussie rivalry for you Chris!

One interesting snippet is that as the pioneers to NZ had a few more pennies when they emigrated, they often took precious household pieces with them. When they found the living conditions were more basic than expected, they wrapped up their china etc and stored it safely away.. According to an antique dealer I knew, that’s why you can get some great antiques in NZ!

Actually I’m a hybrid…I have (yes, unbelievably!) birth certificates from both countries. Growing up in NZ and now living in Australia, I love them both…well maybe NZ a touch more.

Cheers back from your side of the dutch (kiwi for ditch)

And might I add Ms Cheeky Kiwi, convict descendants now consider themselves genealogical royalty in Australia. See what you missed out on over the ditch? Not that I’m in the royalty ranks! My lot were just sometimes illiterate farmers but they were pioneers all the same. And yes one of my great uncles travelled across that ditch for the gold rush and vowed he would never cross it again. So we’ve got some real Kiwi Cousins now! We’re all in it together! Hi Verity,c
My wife has a similar problem with allegiance. Her ancestors were pioneer
settlers of Christchurch yet she is Australian born. She loves cricket and
rugby (union), so avoids watching matches when our 2 countries compete.

The case of pioneers landing with all the trapings of civilization, only to
be confronted with a wild and undeveloped country, is in part a theme
featured in the film "The piano" when this prised instrument was dumped on
the wet sands of Petone beach, there being no wharf facilities at
Wellington back then.

Glad I triggered the old NZ/Aussie rivalry for you Chris!

One interesting snippet is that as the pioneers to NZ had a few more
pennies when they emigrated, they often took precious household pieces with
them. When they found the living conditions were more basic than expected,
they wrapped up their china etc and stored it safely away.. According to an
antique dealer I knew, that’s why you can get some great antiques in NZ!

Actually I’m a hybrid…I have (yes, unbelievably!) birth certificates from
both countries. Growing up in NZ and now living in Australia, I love them
both…well maybe NZ a touch more.

Cheers back from your side of the dutch (kiwi for ditch)

Verity your little dig at the convicts made me snort into my cuppa!

Didn’t know they demanded literacy for your lot, but that meant you didn’t
get the ones who were used to the REALLY hard work!
