Ah, my '96 SSSP. I think that Richard Thompson could have easily written a song about this bike as he did about the Vincent Black Lightning.
Obviously, there are much better performing and more reliable bikes built since then, but there is nothing like the sound and feel of pulling the throttle on a properly modified 900. By properly, I mean, at least, FCR carbs, spaghetti exhaust, high comp pistons, porting; and, while you're at it, throw in a lightened flywheel and light wheels.
Would I choose my 900SSSP for the racetrack? No.
Could I get a bigger thrill canyon scratching on any other bike than that 900? No!
Nuff said.

My original is quite civilized, all stock except for a pair of cf Remus and stage 1 Dynajet.
The ‘96 I lucked upon is a total hooligan. Flat slides, mystery brand high pipes, vented clutch, etc… and hard to keep nose down if I’m in a hurry. So, fun as it may be, I’m now back on the ‘95, and ready to release the hooligan back into the wild. Or not? Any thoughts?

This story sounds very similar to mine. After riding and loving my '96 900 SS SP for about 13 years, I decided that as much as I loved the bike and riding it, I had squeezed hours and hours and miles and miles of fun out of it, and maybe it was time for the bike to start bringing the same joy to a new owner. A good friend had been lusting after the bike for some years (like with James' friend, after seeing it and then riding it), so I sold it to him. Best part of all; he is totally taking care of the bike, down to fixing every tiny little niggling issue it might have. It's in good hands, and can go on to bring my friend years of joy.

This discussion reminds me of the Hunter Thompson 900SS review “Song of the Sausage Creature. Now considered some of his best work, back then I remember reading at and thinking what the hell???? Either way if you want to be inspired by a genuinely wonderful motorcycle a 900SS is the right choice.

Amen to that, Vicki.
I've ridden the BMW S1000RR at Keith Code's Superbike School a few times,
and it is a phenomenal motorcycle. But, despite all its advantages over the
900SSSP, it cannot be anywhere near the same experience. The BMW brings
thrills and grins, but the 900 brings joy and smiles.
The friend who now owns and pampers my '96 900, after riding it for the
first time said, "with this bike, you know you're on a motorcycle."

Ah, my '96 SSSP. I think that Richard Thompson could have easily written
a song about this bike as he did about the Vincent Black Lightning.
Obviously, there are much better performing and more reliable bikes built
since then, but there is nothing like the sound and feel of pulling the
throttle on a properly modified 900. By properly, I mean, at least, FCR
carbs, spaghetti exhaust, high comp pistons, porting; and, while you're at
it, throw in a lightened flywheel and light wheels.
Would I choose my 900SSSP for the racetrack? No.
Could I get a bigger thrill canyon scratching on any other bike than that
900? No!

I don’t normally chime in but this topic is definitely something l think about from time to time.
I had a 1998 M900 that I built with 944kit, hi compa, 41mm FCR carbs, and just a slip on.
But the rawness and the way the bike was just awaken with those hardware is something I just can’t replicate. I did buy a DB4 with the PowerUp kit but it wasn’t as cool as my old beloved Monster.
With the exception of the 888 that sits in the corner I only have mostly modern bikes (BMW GS for the street and V4R for the track).
…..And none of these bikes emote the same feeling of just pure rawness that M900 evoked! From the noise (chirping of the FCR carbs, clacking dry clutch, and L twin rumble) to the low end pull of that motor. They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
Everything is (honestly rightfully and for better riding experience) refined nowadays (with more power, better handling, braking, traction control, etc etc), even at lower price point bikes…

Just a lurker…

Love my M900, my Diavel is a better bike for sure but the M900 puts a bigger smile on my face it will never leave my garage.

Amen to that, Vicki.
I've ridden the BMW S1000RR at Keith Code's Superbike School a few times, and it is a phenomenal motorcycle. But, despite all its advantages over the 900SSSP, it cannot be anywhere near the same experience. The BMW brings thrills and grins, but the 900 brings joy and smiles.
The friend who now owns and pampers my '96 900, after riding it for the first time said, "with this bike, you know you're on a motorcycle."

No!
Nuff said.

Speaking of a ’96 900SS going to good hands,… last year while I was rebuilding-ish my ‘95 900 SSCR (bought new at Amol, rode the bejesus out of it, new top end in 2000, moved to LA and on/off the road since 2012, so really deserved some tlc :), I had to pick up a ‘96 900 SSCR to ride in the meanwhile, of course.

Sold my 2006 S2R 1000 to a friend. I have had it for about 13 years and it was hard to let it go. What convinced me was how excited he was when he saw it and even more when he rode it. In it's current form it is just too compact riding position for these old bones. At least I know it will go to a good home.

Personally I admire bikes (and cars too) that need you. Impractical machines have a place in my heart. What I mean by that is as fantastic as modern bikes are the connection between man and machine feels to me, less intimate. They do so much of the work for you. Make a mistake on a modern bike and the electronics (hopefully) keep you in a cradle. Make that same mistake on an old bike and you are looking for replacement fairings. Lately I have been driving an old Italian car. It looks fast sitting still but compared to the new stuff really isn’t. But the connection between the car and driver, shifting gears, the sound of the motor. Car and driver are very connected. My 80’s 911 is like this too. M900’s, 90’s Supersports, they feel like this to me as well. It’s also a great way to meet people. Makes a good case for keeping one in the garage beside all the incredible modern choices we have today.

No!

This thread raises the old question of what speaks to us. The ‘90s 900’s (SS, M) hit a sweet spot across a bunch of variables for me. Clearly not the basic stats, but hard to define ones like these twins impact on cornering grip, etc… culminating with the “feeling” of a bike, timeless Italian design, the man/machine affair you raise below Vicki, and something about being in a certain age cohort – I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time when they rolled out.

While on this topic, is anyone selling a Ducati that I don't need but could
end up buying :)

bike and the electronics (hopefully) keep you in a cradle. Make that same
mistake on an old bike and you are looking for replacement fairings. Lately
I have been driving an old Italian car. It looks fast sitting still but
compared to the new stuff really isn’t. But the connection between the car
and driver, shifting gears, the sound of the motor. Car and driver are very
connected. My 80’s 911 is like this too. M900’s, 90’s Supersports, they
feel like this to me as well. It’s also a great way to meet people. Makes
a good case for keeping one in the garage beside all the incredible modern
choices we have today.

I don’t normally chime in but this topic is definitely something l think
about from time to time.
I had a 1998 M900 that I built with 944kit, hi compa, 41mm FCR carbs, and
just a slip on.
But the rawness and the way the bike was just awaken with those hardware
is something I just can’t replicate. I did buy a DB4 with the PowerUp kit
but it wasn’t as cool as my old beloved Monster.
With the exception of the 888 that sits in the corner I only have mostly
modern bikes (BMW GS for the street and V4R for the track).
…..And none of these bikes emote the same feeling of just pure rawness
that M900 evoked! From the noise (chirping of the FCR carbs, clacking dry
clutch, and L twin rumble) to the low end pull of that motor. They just
don’t make ‘em like that anymore.
Everything is (honestly rightfully and for better riding experience)
refined nowadays (with more power, better handling, braking, traction
control, etc etc), even at lower price point bikes…

Amen to that, Vicki.
I've ridden the BMW S1000RR at Keith Code's Superbike School a few times,
and it is a phenomenal motorcycle. But, despite all its advantages over the
900SSSP, it cannot be anywhere near the same experience. The BMW brings
thrills and grins, but the 900 brings joy and smiles.
The friend who now owns and pampers my '96 900, after riding it for the
first time said, "with this bike, you know you're on a motorcycle."

Ah, my '96 SSSP. I think that Richard Thompson could have easily written a
song about this bike as he did about the Vincent Black Lightning.
No.
Could I get a bigger thrill canyon scratching on any other bike than that
900? No!
Nuff said.

Speaking of a ’96 900SS going to good hands,… last year while I was

really deserved some tlc :), I had to pick up a ‘96 900 SSCR to ride in the
meanwhile, of course.
My original is quite civilized, all stock except for a pair of cf Remus
and stage 1 Dynajet.
The ‘96 I lucked upon is a total hooligan. Flat slides, mystery brand
high pipes, vented clutch, etc… and hard to keep nose down if I’m in a
hurry. So, fun as it may be, I’m now back on the ‘95, and ready to release
the hooligan back into the wild. Or not? Any thoughts?

This story sounds very similar to mine. After riding and loving my '96 900
SS SP for about 13 years, I decided that as much as I loved the bike and
riding it, I had squeezed hours and hours and miles and miles of fun out of
it, and maybe it was time for the bike to start bringing the same joy to a
new owner. A good friend had been lusting after the bike for some years
(like with James' friend, after seeing it and then riding it), so I sold it
to him. Best part of all; he is totally taking care of the bike, down to
fixing every tiny little niggling issue it might have. It's in good hands,
and can go on to bring my friend years of joy.

compact riding position for these old bones. At least I know it will go to

Gosh, I'd like to think your M900 leaves the garage all the time.

No.
Could I get a bigger thrill canyon scratching on any other bike than that
900? No!
Nuff said.

really deserved some tlc :), I had to pick up a ‘96 900 SSCR to ride in the
meanwhile, of course.
