Maine Ulster Scots Project Talk in Chicago

“Ulster History on the Eastern Frontier”

CoTyroneIreland listers may be interested in tuning in for this Zoom presentation in Chicago tomorrow, courtesy the Maine Ulster Scot Project.

Timing is 10:00 a.m. Chicago Time or 11:00 a.m. EST (Eastern Standard Time).

There is no charge for registering and tuning in. EVERYONE IS WELCOME! For registration and more info: see [ http://www.chicagoscots.org/events | www.chicagoscots.org/events ] or find this on the Maine Ulster Scots Facebook page.

The presenter is Dr John Mann, co-founder and Chairman Emeritus, of the Maine Ulster Scots Project who will give an extensive lecture to the world-wide audience of the Scottish American History Forum, under the banner of the Chicago Scots.

The lecture will focus on the Scots and Ulster Scots settlement of the “Eastern Frontier” and the Maine Project’s role in documenting their story. John is a passionate and experienced historian from Maine, himself descended from the early settlers. As a land surveyor by profession, he is meticulous in unpacking the detail and reading the landscape that shaped lives and stories ….

John is also the author of “ Ulster-Scots on the Coast of Maine” dealing with the Means Massacre of May 10, 1756 (in what is now Freeport, Maine).

I had the pleasure of meeting John in person a few years ago at an Ulster Emigration Conference in Maine, which was also attended by well-known names such as Dr William Roulston from the Ulster Historical Foundation, Belfast. This was to celebrate the Ulster Diaspora 2018 Reunion, for "Three Centuries of Scots-Irish Heritage -- August 14-18, 2018" at Bowdoin College, in Brunswick, Maine. A grand conference which I was thrilled to have been able to attend.

I cannot speak more highly of John’s interest and determination in promoting the study, understanding and recognition of the Irish and Ulster migrations into North America and around the globe.

As I write this, I am mindful of a quote a colleague shared just this morning among my WhatsApp messages:

“There is nothing more powerful than a humble person with a warrior spirit driven by a higher purpose.”

John is most certainly a warrior to our ancestral cause and I look forward to listening to him again.

(PS -- This is an unsolicited marketing and promo blurb -- John would probably want to bliksem me for doing this. However, I wanted to share this with all on our CoTyroneIreland list .... )

Warm regards to all
