Before we leave the topic of schools, I have a question arising from a source local to the US. It contains information about the education of William Hopper Ewing (1827-1899) from County Tyrone. The pages about his life includes this statement, “Captain William H. Ewing received his education in Ireland, while in subscription school, kept [in] an upper room of his father’s house.” [p.15]. Ewing and his family emigrated to the US in 1836 when he would have been about 10 years old. The source is History on the Riverfront: the Newton Hamilton Sesquicentennial by Charles Samuel “Sam” Miller (Newton Hamilton, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, 1993.) The lists of schools Len has been transcribing name the master of the school and its general location. None reference a school in a private house. Is there a way to dig deeper into locations? Newspapers perhaps?
