So many thanks Len Swindley!
This is my Allen family church. I attended Sunday services at the Church
in September 2022 with my daughter.
Our great-great grandfather migrated with his family in 1851 to escape
famine and ultimately founded a town in
northeast Nebraska in 1897 (Allen, Nebraska) after 8 years in
Philadelphia and then Dane County, Wisconsin.
We found records of our family thanks to the efforts of the volunteers here
at CoTyroneIreland.com. THANK YOU James McKane for managing this resource-
it is invaluable. I encourage everyone to provide a donation to support
this important resource.
Happy 2024 to ALL,

Good to hear from you Valerie and thanks for your kind expressions and encouragement. Yes, I recall your visit to Donegal and a most enjoyable time. I think it unlikely that your forebear emigrated from Ireland because hunger, but the economic downturn and lack of opportunity and inability to own his own land in his native country.
Generally, Presbyterians did not starve during the Famine years as their diet was influenced by their Scottish heritage; the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of the 1830s record regularly their reliance upon oatmeal, not the potato.
Thank you for your ongoing support,
Regards,
Len

Very interesting comment about the Presbyterians, who relied on oatmeal, faring better during the famine than the native Irish whose mainstay was the potato. I have wondered how my Tyrone and Tipperary ancestors coped in ’The Great Hunger’ and whether one group was better off than the other. A local historian in Thurles, Tipperary talked about Protestant churchmen who dispensed food in exchange for conversion. People there still talk about how some desperate folk “took the soup” and became Methodists, Baptists, etc.
Thank you, Len, for another of your very valuable insights and for all that you and Jim do!
