I got 5 more signatures on the flag:
Zarco
Miller
Bastianini
Spies
Hopkins
We snuck into the pits and I was able to get Zarco, Miller and Bastianini
before we were discovered and asked to leave. :)
Spies and Hopper were chance meetings.
Can't wait to get back home and update the web site, it's been a while:

It all started when we got an offer for a VIP package at COTA from a tour
company we used in the past for European races. It was too good to turn
down.
That got us, me and my wife, into the VIP suites above the paddock, but no
paddock access.
I brought the flag to the track on Friday but soon realized that things
were too controlled to be able to get any signatures.
So, on Saturday, I left the flag in the hotel room. (Big mistake) I didn't
know that the suite we were sharing would also be hosting Ben Spies. He
showed up Saturday morning and my heart sank. The back story is that I was
outside of his box in Indy, waiting for the session to end and him to come
out to sign the flag, when he crashed.
I spent most of Saturday kinda depressed, but hey, you win some, you lose
some.
Sunday I made sure to bring the flag. Sure enough, Ben was there in the
morning (yay!). He signed it and asked about some of the other signatures.
I talked with him for about 15 minutes. It was great.
About a half hour after the races ended, my wife comes up to me and says,
"Come with me." I asked why and she says, "Just come".
I follow her and she takes me to a stairwell. We go down the stairs, open
the door and bam, we are in the paddock. No control checking passes at the
door.
We briskly walk down to the Ducati/Pramac/Avintia/Sky area. My goal was to
get Ruben Xaus because I figured the riders would be long gone by now. The
teams were boxing everything up. As luck would have it, Bastianini came
out, then Zarco (he was not a happy camper) and then Miller.
We were there for about 20 minutes before someone asked for our credentials
and then politely escorted us to the exit. :)
We get back to the suite and damed if Hopper, and Josh Hayes, are there,
talking about the American Racing team. Of course I had to have him sign
due to his British Superbikes stint.
Sorry for the long post and if you made it this far, thank you for reading.

Worth reading, thanks for sharing.
I know the feeling and definitely know the excitement of taking selfies or even stalking the riders. This is my first year on not having Paddock passes. But don't regret on attending. It was worth every minute and every cent spent traveling to Austin for Motogp.

Didn’t Hayes also get a MotoGP wildcard at Laguna a few years ago?

Great story Bob, thanks for sharing!
The only time in my life I ever got flustered meeting someone was when I accidentally yelled at a guy and it turned out to be Kevin Schwantz. It was sad....
