Dear Juliette, Len, and Jim,

My sincere thanks to you for this fascinating piece of social history.  Poor Catherine Caldwell…underpaid for years and subjected to such unbelievable meanness after all those years of service to the sick and destitute!

It’s possible that this lady was one of my relatives as the family hailed from the Omagh area.  My great-grandfather, Robert Caldwell (1836-1881), was baptised in the 2nd Presbyterian Church of Omagh.  Wonder if they were sibs?

Best wishes,

Pat

Thank you for this.  I was beyond sad and/angry - i was outraged!
Women in Ireland have had to battle harder than many to overcome the ‘pale, stale, males’ dictating how they should live their lives. (With all due respect and apologies to Jim and Len and the many other fine contributors here. Please dont take offence 😳)

A touching story which highlights the poverty of the times, amongst
other things.  Employment then and during the Great Famine, in
Workhouses and Hospitals, was often a labour of love. My Great aunt,
Mary McBEATH (1865-1887) became a nurse and then matron of the Coleraine
Fever Hospital in Londonderry. She never married and died when only 22.
During the famine of the 1840s, the Coleraine workhouse was extended and
in 1847, a 40-bed Fever hospital was built on the site. The workhouse
had its own burial ground. The challenges of the time!!! Her father
served in the military where he got a regular meal. Her uncle William
McBETH* (b. 25 December 1837, Londonderry, Ireland. d. 10 November 1924,
Osceola, Polk County, Nebraska, USA) was a pioneer settler of Osceola
and is commemorated in their civic records. A family driven to desperate
measures by the poverty of famine.

Oh my goodness… Here I am 140 years later, judging those mean-spirited, mendacious, miserable men….

Poor Catherine Caldwell… What an honourable and loyal servant.

Thank you to Len, Jim and Juliette for bringing history alive and making such posts so visceral and relevant.

With Gratitude and Best Wishes

Thank you, Janet,

Juliette must be thanked for transcribing the reports of the Board of Guardians deliberations; I was so angered by the mean-spirited pettiness that I felt that the names of those Guardians should be made known and included them in the file. It was pertinent also to include her death; a rather short retirement was to be her lot.
Hoping that Catherine left a will it was a surprise that she did indeed and the image is available of the PRONI Wills Calendars PRONI Will Calendars - Image Viewerhttps://apps.proni.gov.uk/willscalendar_ie/WillsSearchImage.aspx?id=180325 She was a prudent soul leaving an estate of one hundred and twenty-six pounds, five shillings and ninepence to charities, named relatives and others. She was indeed a faithful and loyal servant.

CTI contains another file concerning the Omagh Workhouse Deportation of Famine Orphans from Omagh, Gortin & Strabane, Co. Tyrone Workhouses to Melbourne, Australia, October 1848 (cotyroneireland.com)https://www.cotyroneireland.com/famine/deportation1848.html describing the "deported" Famine girls as "idle paupers"

A little-known consequence of the devastation caused by the Great Famine (1845-50) was the large numbers of young orphans admitted to workhouses across Ireland and a scheme of emigration to the Australian colonies devised in Westminster to alleviate overcrowding: approximately 5,000 female pauper orphans emigrated 1848-50.Passages were paid by the colonials who were in great need of house ...

Pat

Thanks so much for the link to Catherine’s will, Len.  I couldn’t find any evidence that she was related to me, other than the name Caldwell and the Omagh location.  She was also Church of Ireland and my GG parents were Presbyterians.  I’m not sure how significant that was in those days as it may have been a question of which church was closer or which minister was preferred.

This article has elicited much justified outrage from our group and I’m very grateful to you, Juliette, and Jim for publishing it in its entirety.

Best wishes,

Pat
