Shirley, not quite like the Manly ferry. Even a very rough day would be like a mill pond on that North Atlantic crossing! More like the Bass Strait crossing, but even in a gale, that is gentle compared with rounding Portrush and the Giant's causeway. ;)

Cheryl,
There are no travel records for people going from Tyrone to Scotland. It was then, and still is, just a short domestic journey. As you perhaps know there was a regular overnight sailing from Londonderry to Glasgow as well as numerous sailings from Belfast and Larne. Scotland was particularly attractive not only because there was plenty of work there, it was cheap and easy to get to and you could come home for the harvest or a wedding. So folk went back and forth all the time.
All you can do is note her first arrival in Scottish records, and use that as the approximate date of her move to Scotland. Check the 1861 Scottish census (on Scotlandspeople). Perhaps she married in Scotland before that in which case there may be a marriage to find there and children’s births which might narrow the date of her move a bit more. Note that if she happened to marry or have a child in Scotland in 1855 (only) the certificate should contain extra information including her age & place of birth in Ireland. (1855 was the first year of birth registration and this extra information was dropped after it as it was too time consuming to record).

Gordon, I am sorry to hear your great grandfather could not be saved on that rough trip. I did not imagine such a passage would not be rough, merely pointing out to Cheryl (who I know quite well personally) that such a short trip would not have required records to be kept, especially in those far off years.
Although I have not undertaken that trip myself, I have done the Bass Strait overnight trip where I was violently ill because of the tossing , (and the return crossing being tossed out of my bunk!). I have been on the Manly Ferry more than once while it was crossing the Sydney Heads on a rough day so not entirely ignorant of what it must have been like. Indeed many emigrant and convict ships coming to Australia from Britain did not make it at all, given the length of the voyage, which at first took seven months! (the First Fleet) and especially when the ship was negotiating the roaring forties which was a hazard in itself.
Cheryl would be better checking the census records in 1841 and 1851 as I have told her.
