CL
Craig Leeman
Sat, Nov 28, 2020 12:09 AM

Hi All, does anyone have access to baptism records for Ballygawley Church of Ireland in parish of Errigal Keerogue for 1800s?

Or to a register of workers at the Lisdoart mill circa 1880?

Kind regards,
Craig Leeman

Thanks Jim.
I’m afraid that the many hours ran into many years; referring back to my initial notes to when commencing this expansive file they are dated 1998. Apologies for the delay – not so simple when gleaning the data down here in Melbourne. I am hoping that the East Donegal bevy of CTI subscribers locate a forebear.

Craig,

Things don’t look so good for your search for Ballygawley C of I records; pre 1879 registers were lost  in the destruction of the Public Record Office, Dublin in 1922 (see attachment). Records of births, marriages and deaths may be found in civil registration certificates from 1845. Irish Genealogyhttps://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ should assist your search; remember, the registration district is Clogher.

Re. records for Lisdoart Mill, it may be worthwhile contacting PRONI and enquiring if anything has survived – they contain considerable records of defunct businesses, but for a detailed search it would be necessary to hire a researcher.

PRONI has some papers for Lisdoart Mill, in the fond D1687. They seem to
cover the years 1923 – 1949, with a time and wages book for 1943/44
(D1687/2). I don’t see anything pre 1923.

Staff records weren’t seen as very important in the 1800s and few survive
generally.

Things don’t look so good for your search for Ballygawley C of I records;
pre 1879 registers were lost  in the destruction of the Public Record

deaths may be found in civil registration certificates from 1845. Irish
Genealogy https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ should assist your

Re. records for Lisdoart Mill, it may be worthwhile contacting PRONI and
enquiring if anything has survived – they contain considerable records of
defunct businesses, but for a detailed search it would be necessary to hire
a researcher.

Thanks Jim.
I’m afraid that the many hours ran into many years; referring back to my
initial notes to when commencing this expansive file they are dated 1998.
Apologies for the delay – not so simple when gleaning the data down here in

a forebear.

Thanks for this information and advice. That’s a real shame. I see that some later burials are in local custody, does that mean still in the church at Ballygawley?

Len, I can vouch for your reference to 'Irish Genealogy'. A great source
of info and it even has digital copies of the original documents, which
often contain extra info. I've recently been able to push back a couple
of generations of 2 lines on my grandfather's mother's side. Gordon

Yes, Gordon, Irish Genealogy irishgenealogy.ie Irish Genealogyhttps://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp is an absolute gift to researchers for sure. And the civil registration certificates can be downloaded free of charge. What a gift! And Protestant marriage certificates (commenced 1845) contain the names of fathers of both bride and groom offering further research opportunities to entries in the tithe applotment books of the 1820s-30s.

Civil registration of Catholic marriages and all births and marriages in Ireland commenced 1864.

Congratulations on your successes, Gordon.

Personally speaking, the civil registration records are a wee bit late for my research; such is the fate of those of us whose forebears emigrated prior to the Great Famine 1845-50.
