Hello Jim,

Thank you so very much, for posting yet another wonderful contribution from our enormously appreciated, and legendary, Len Swindley!

I have no biological links to the MAXWELL line, but wish to advise any who do have links to the Maxwell’s from 'Millbrook,’ near Derry, that it might be worth their while, investigating some of the Co.Tyrone, Co.Donegal diaspora to Australia.

I have a John Maxwell, (Born circa 1800, Co.Tyrone. Died: 1883 ‘Millbrook,’ Kiera Vale, Foxground Region, New South Wales, Australia), in my tree.

John Maxwell’s immigration records show that he arrived in Australia, in October 1838, stating that he was from Ardstraw, Co.Tyrone. Married to Eliza Maxwell, (nee Evans).
John Maxwell listed his parents as Robert Maxwell and Ann Maxwell, (nee Patterson).
Aboard the ship, ‘Parland', with John and Elizabeth, were their 4 children, John Maxwell, (aged 9 years), Sarah Maxwell, (aged 7 years), William Maxwell, (aged 4 years), and Ann Maxwell, (aged 14 months).

John, Eliza, and the children purchased farming land, in the beautifully verdant Illawarra region, of New South Wales, Australia and named their Australian home, ‘Millbrook.’  Perhaps, suggesting a link to Millbrook, near Derry?

Ann Maxwell, who was 14 months old on her arrival in Australia, in Oct 1838, went on to marry my G.G.Grandfather, Andrew Wilson, (Born: Cavandarragh, Parish of Ardstraw, Co.Tyrone, circa 1830 - Died: Foxground, New South Wales, Australia, 1904).

I hope that the information I have shared might be of some use to others.

Thank you once again Len Swindley, for your outstanding contribution to the Co.Tyrone list, and to Jim for publishing Len’s efforts, for our avid consumption and enjoyment.

Kindest regards

Janet Fairless (nee Wilson)

Good evening Janet!

It’s heartening hearing that your Wilson research in Ardstraw parish continues; and we need not look to Co. Londonderry for Millbrook is not a townland but is a subdenomination of Milltown townland about a kilometre of Ardstraw village

Using the CTI Search Function Every Word Search CoTyroneIreland.com Every Word Searchhttps://cotyroneireland.com/sphider/search.php I located Millbrook in one of my old files; Ardstraw Wills ARDSTRAW WILLS (cotyroneireland.com)https://www.cotyroneireland.com/wills/ARDSTRAW_WILLS.htm with a reference to the 1848 will of John Smyth, so then went looking for it on the PTONI website and found:

[cid:c98edf22-d41f-4ae3-87c6-b2251ace9e62]

[cid:756eced0-0343-41a3-9296-b1d94cf0e03f]

lying close to the junction of the Strule and Derg Rivers.

This may be the native place of John Maxwell; he is not recorded in the 1833 Ardstraw Title Applotment book indicating that he was most likely a labourer residing in a cottage and not earning an income from any land.

The Ordnance Survey Memoirs for Ardstraw record two mills in Milltown – a flax mill operated by John Smith and a corn mill (John Chambers, proprietor).

Yes, there was considerable Tyrone emigration to New South Wales, Australia from parishes stretching from Ardstraw to Donacavey as reflected in my files Born Co. Tyrone, Ireland, Married & Died in the Colony of New South Wales, Australia 1837-79 (cotyroneireland.com)https://www.cotyroneireland.com/bornburied/australia3.html
Born Co. Tyrone; Married or Died, New South Wales, Australia - 1870-1907 (cotyroneireland.com)https://www.cotyroneireland.com/bornburied/buriedmarriedAustralia9.html

Hope you are keeping well Janet and many thanks for your very kind comments; such feedback seems to be quite a rare event and Jim deserves continual thanks for his continuous efforts as a great webmaster.

All good wishes,

Len
