Inquiry-McKenna and Conroy

Hi,

I’d like to inquire if there are records associated with my family who
resided in the Omagh and Altamuskin area. If there is a different way to go
about this, please let me know.

Rose Ann (Annie) McKenna was born in Omagh on September 1, 1886, in County
Tyrone. Her parents were Bridget (Biddy) ODonnelly, and Arthur McKenna.

She is reported to have married John Joseph Conroy in Eskragh, Tyrone on
August 25, 1907, or possibly 1905. She immigrated to the US in 1905 or 1907
according to census records in the US.

Arthur McKenna was born in 1846.

Bridget was born in 1851. She may have been born in Kilnageer.

They both remained in Ireland until their deaths.

John Joseph Conroy was born in 1876, to Joannis and Matilda Donaghy on
January 11, 1876 in Tyrone.

Joannis and Matilda Donaghy appear to have remained in Ireland until their
deaths. Joann is may have resided in Seskinore according to the 1901
census.  Joannis may have passed away in July of 1902. Matilda may have
passed away in Magherafelt, Londonderry on March 18, 1891.

I’d like to know if there are birth, baptism, marriage, or death records
for any of the people outlined above that I might be able to access or see.
I am also interested in any records about their travel to America. John is
reported to have come to New York when he was 14, made his way to Oakland,
CA and started a business. He returned to Ireland and met and married
Annie. I have not been able to locate these records, though the dates I
have were provided by older family.

In addition, I would like to visit the cemeteries where those that remained
in Ireland are buried if possible this July when we visit Ireland if anyone
can point me in the right direction for the correct cemetery. I also
wondered if the church that they would have attended is still in existence
today to possibly see and visit it while we are there. I see some
businesses near the area that are run by McKenna’s and I do wonder if they
are distant relatives.

Does anyone know of a group like this for County Longford or County Cork?

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any further
information. Thank you for any help you might be able to offer.

Annie,

Here’s Rose Ann’s birth in Kilnaheery. Note that her mother’s maiden name was recorded as Donnelly rather than O’Donnelly. (O’Donnelly wouldn’t be all that common, in Tyrone anyway. None in the 1901 census).

Anne McKenna married John Conroy at Eskra chapel in 1907 (not 1905).

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1907/10100/5674591.pdf

So you are probably looking for emigration records in 1907 not 1905. Have you tried Ancestry and Findmypast?

Annie and family in 1901 census:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Cecil/Kilnakeery/1725832/

Family in 1911:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tyrone/Cecil/Kilnaheery/855665/

You mention Joannis Conroy. Many early RC records were kept in Latin.  Joannis or Ioannis is the Latin for John. So he was just John Conroy and would have been known as that to family and in most other records.

John Conroy’s birth in 1876:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1876/03067/2124319.pdf

John Conroy senior in 1901:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Seskinore/Freughmore/1743719/

Same household in 1911:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tyrone/Seskinore/Freughmore/872372/

John Controy married Matilda Donaghey in  18770 in Donacavey chapel. He was a widower:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1870/11369/8174640.pdf

I don’t see a marriage for Arthur McKenna and Bridget Donnelly.

Eskra(gh) Chapel Facebook page. Looks like they have a nice new church:

https://m.facebook.com/people/Eskra-Parish/100067578095264/

Address: Eskra Rd, Omagh BT78 2RJ

As far as finding graves is concerned, I’d start with St Patrick’s (Eskra) in Clogher. There are 4 or 5 other graveyards in the parish used for RC burials but I’d start there. Ask at the parish office what records they have. (Probably none but you never know).

Statutory registration of births, deaths and RC marriages started in 1864. Prior to that you need to search parish records. They are on-lien free on the national library site, and also on Ancestry and Findmypast.  Some records are lost, some are incomplete and in some cases they don’t go back too far either. For example Clogher RC has baptisms from 1856 onwards, marriages from 1825 but with gaps. Note that there is also a church at Aughintaine which is in the same parish. They have separate records but they only start in 1870.

In the 1901 census of Tyrone there were 1201 people named McKenna. 1723 named Donnelly. 65 named Conroy.

Dear Annie,

I'd suggest focusing on 1908 and 1909 immigration records, since the family
reported her year of immigration as 1908 at the time of the 1910 census (15
April); the memory of her immigration would still be very recent and more
accurate. Plus, her husband's year of immigration was listed as 1891 on
that census tabulation (and it noted that he had already naturalized as a
US citizen).

There aren't great search results on Ancestry for a Rose or Annie Conroy
arriving in the US in either of those years.

  • If she had an aunt called Mrs Carney living in Philadelphia, then she
arrived at Philadelphia on 9 April 1908 aboard the Merion.
  • There are some John and Ann Conroys who arrive at Boston in May and
August 1909, but they're listed on the ship lists in a way that suggests
they weren't married. But they'd be worth investigating.
  • She could be the Annie Conroy who arrived at a Canadian port in 1909
(nothing more known on Ancestry; I didn't check Findmypast).
  • Or it may be that the record has been lost.

Good luck in your hunting!

All best,
r.

p.s. If anyone ever has the gumption to help me with my Hagan / O'Hagan
ancestors in county Tyrone, I'd love it -- but as they emigrated to the US
between 1838 and 1843, I think I have to accept defeat beyond what I've
pieced together with some DNA matches.

Hi Ladies,

These ships lists were compiled by the ship’s agent before the ship sailed as they needed to know  who was actually on board in case of mishaps or worse.  Commonsense when you think about it.

Some single people on the same  ship  had planned to leave it until they were on the ship and sailing before they got married.  They would then ask the ship’s Captain to marry them as he was legally able to do this.  They could have any number of reasons to do this i.e. opposition to the marriage by relatives at home maybe.  Also I believe it cost less to get married on board ship, maybe it was free.

They would then arrive at their new destination as a married couple but the original agents list would still be showing them as single people.  Something to look into if you cannot find a marriage.

Just a thought.

Dear Annie,

I'd suggest focusing on 1908 and 1909 immigration records, since the family reported her year of immigration as 1908 at the time of the 1910 census (15 April); the memory of her immigration would still be very recent and more accurate. Plus, her husband's year of immigration was listed as 1891 on that census tabulation (and it noted that he had already naturalized as a US citizen).

There aren't great search results on Ancestry for a Rose or Annie Conroy arriving in the US in either of those years.
• If she had an aunt called Mrs Carney living in Philadelphia, then she arrived at Philadelphia on 9 April 1908 aboard the Merion.
• There are some John and Ann Conroys who arrive at Boston in May and August 1909, but they're listed on the ship lists in a way that suggests they weren't married. But they'd be worth investigating.
• She could be the Annie Conroy who arrived at a Canadian port in 1909 (nothing more known on Ancestry; I didn't check Findmypast).
• Or it may be that the record has been lost.
Good luck in your hunting!

All best,
r.

p.s. If anyone ever has the gumption to help me with my Hagan / O'Hagan ancestors in county Tyrone, I'd love it -- but as they emigrated to the US between 1838 and 1843, I think I have to accept defeat beyond what I've pieced together with some DNA matches.

As far as finding graves is concerned, I’d start with St Patrick’s (Eskra)

Prior to that you need to search parish records. They are on-lien free on

records are lost, some are incomplete and in some cases they don’t go back
too far either. For example Clogher RC has baptisms from 1856 onwards,

they only start in 1870.

In addition, I would like to visit the cemeteries where those that
remained in Ireland are buried if possible this July when we visit Ireland
if anyone can point me in the right direction for the correct cemetery. I
also wondered if the church that they would have attended is still in
existence today to possibly see and visit it while we are there. I see some
businesses near the area that are run by McKenna’s and I do wonder if they
are distant relatives.

Does anyone know of a group like this for County Longford or County Cork?

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any further
information. Thank you for any help you might be able to offer.

Annie Kurtz

Dear friends

It's a small world, so many connections and interconnections.

Annie Kurtz and Elwyn Soutter have been corresponding and talking about McKenna, Conroy, Donnelly, Donaghey, etc. in and around Seskinore and that vicinity, as Annie plans a visit to Ireland.

I am more familiar with the spelling "Froughmore" than the "Freughmore" as shown on the 1911 Census, heard this placename mentioned often ....

The attached is a painting of House No. 5 as shown in the 1911 Census for Freughmore (Loughmuck, Tyrone), occupied by Robert Mitchell and his wife Maggie (Adams) and their household. The artist is the late Enid Atkinson (nee Mitchell), who was Robert's niece.

A typical scene, as captured through the brushes of an artist, one who loved her Irishness albeit she was a generation removed.

Should anyone seek further information, please do contact me.

Joannis and Matilda Donaghy appear to have remained in Ireland until their
deaths. Joann is may have resided in Seskinore according to the 1901 census.
Joannis may have passed away in July of 1902. Matilda may have passed away in
Magherafelt, Londonderry on March 18, 1891.

I’d like to know if there are birth, baptism, marriage, or death records for any
of the people outlined above that I might be able to access or see. I am also
interested in any records about their travel to America. John is reported to
have come to New York when he was 14, made his way to Oakland, CA and started a
business. He returned to Ireland and met and married Annie. I have not been
able to locate these records, though the dates I have were provided by older
family.

In addition, I would like to visit the cemeteries where those that remained in
Ireland are buried if possible this July when we visit Ireland if anyone can
point me in the right direction for the correct cemetery. I also wondered if
the church that they would have attended is still in existence today to
possibly see and visit it while we are there. I see some businesses near the
area that are run by McKenna’s and I do wonder if they are distant relatives.

Does anyone know of a group like this for County Longford or County Cork?

Please let me know if you have any questions or need any further information.
Thank you for any help you might be able to offer.

Annie Kurtz

Dear friends It's a small world, so many connections and interconnections.
