My Dad talked about the epidemics that they lived through and most not
recorded. They were just simply a sickness a Grippe. One such an event
occurred when he was a young boy and a neighbour came into the yard with
his buggy and a small boy my dad knew, he was burning up with fever and
was on the way to Richmond which had the only doctor in the area. A last
hope for a parent desperate to save a small beloved child. The neighbour
told my Grandpa what he had and begged some water for the his son. My
dad said Grandpa went to the well and drew water took a pitcher of water
from the pail and gave it to the dying child. He drank all he could and
the neighbour thanked my Grandpa and they drove on leaving my Grandpa
standing in the yard holding the empty dipper. When the buggy was out of
sight my dad reported that grandpa reared back and throw the dipper out
into the surrounding fields as far as his considerable strength would
allow and they never saw or used  the dipper again.
