The case for checking and double-checking all available sources!

As Co. Tyrone listers we are once again spoilt by all the kind work done by Len Swindley and others, also Jim McKane in running and supporting our website.

I wanted to use one marriage item as an example of just why we should check as many sources as may be available and never, never assume that we might have all the answers.

Please look at this entry, from the GRO transcript marriage registers of the Linenhall Street Presbyterian Church in Belfast, for a marriage that occurred on 7 th July 1848 ….

[ https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1848/09343/5383163.pdf | https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1848/09343/5383163.pdf ]

Very clearly this is a record of the marriage between Thomas H. Black of Coleraine and Hannah Gilmore, a spinster of full age, resident in Ballymacarrett which is a townland or ward in Belfast – faithfully recorded and duly signed off in the hand of the clergyman Rev. Robert Knox who was present with the parties and who performed the actual marriage.

Thanks to Len’s diligence, we can put a whole new slant to this happy event ….

Indeed, this happy bride was no Belfast lassie. She was a County Tyrone girl, from Lisrone, a townland near Moy and between Dungannon and Armagh – Black/Gilmour family researchers please note, and please also note the different spellings of the surname ….

Interestingly, the officiating clergyman at the Linenhall Street Church in Belfast was a Co. Tyrone man too. Rev. Robert Knox was a son of Hugh Knox of Urney, Co. Tyrone, and the grandson of Gustavous Knox of Little Drumenny, in Donagheady parish …. my ain kith and kin!

Thanks, Len, for your kind posting – you have led me to downloading images for pages and pages of the Linenhall Street marriage registers, all in Robert Knox’s own handwriting and with so many examples of his own signature – a real treasure trove!

Yes Dave,

sometimes the record can be 'screwed up' by careless recorders.
Sometimes too the name is misspelled - as in my research, "Harrow" for
"O'Hara", for one of many examples - or the Bride's maiden name confused
with that of the informant or witness, and even the place of residence
mentioned in the newspaper confused with the place of the church. As you
rightly point out: check, check and check again as much as you can and
treat all information as conditional until cross-checked. Even family
lore can be distorted by time or ...

Cheers, Gordon
