Kevin,
Read Neil Peart’s story.
Word of his passing made up my mind for me. He was a brainiac and health nut, except for smoking,,,peddled and rode moto everywhere.
But…anyway.
(I KNOW we have a few troopers/survivors here…Jim Calandro, at the very least.)
We can do the best we can, then “something” happens.
But, yes…doing the best wee can to postpone the inevitable and living the fullest while we can.
I see (with a certain envy/jealousy) that MANY of you do that already and I think it’s awesome!!
The Z-50 at age 4, a TTR-125, DR-650, then anything with 2 wheels he could get a hold of.
He’s probably the youngest to ‘crash’ a Ducati.
When he was <5, he leaned the 900 off get side stand and kicked it up….!!!
He had some quick reflexes..but it smashed some fiberPlastic..and he wasn’t injured.
My wife called and said..”I have some bags news. Garret knocked over the Ducati”
My first response was…”Is he ok?!?!”
Yeah..I know..priorities.
:-)
I’m going for a bicycle ride.

Ah, but you can earn or save more time:
Stay fit, eat well, get good sleep, see a doctor when you need to, take appropriate precautions when doing potentially dangerous things.
Or, maybe it's more like robbing yourself of time when you don't do these things.
Hey, Bill Wahl, when I visited you years ago, weren't you working ski patrols? How old were you then? Are you still working the ski patrol, or at least skiing? I was impressed.

On this note….
I bought an Ohvale GP2 mini bike for myself.
I am having so much fun on it i want my kids (age range 7,9,& 11) to give a try.
So I’ve been looking at the smaller GP0 110 automatic. They’re hard to come by used and you’ve got lots of parents with the same mindset trying to get their kids into it also.
I tried the dirt bike thing with them. But since I have zero dirt back ground it’s hard for me to teach them anything.
Cool topic! 😄

That's cool! I only started him on bikes in June 2020 when he was 15. I started him out on a 2020 Honda CRF125FB Big Wheel but this year he's been riding my Yamaha TT-230 more than me. We mostly go to our local motocross track but have tried some trails here and there. He's not the most naturally talented rider, (ha!) but he's very coachable and a good learner. I thought about getting a Kawasaki ZXR400 and using that for a track bike until he's ready and then it would be his first bike. Or...going the other way, maybe a Yamaha TTR-250...that small street legal enduro. I don't know. The biggest battle will be convincing his Mom that he should ride on the street.
His brother (my stepson but really, my son) is 29 and I taught him to ride at the same time as my 16 yr old. He and I were sharing the TT-230 but he's 6'3 and I'm 5'3" so...it didn't really fit him. He bought a CRF250 motocross bike and is starting to get familiar with that.
When Andy (16yr old) was riding it didn't really look like he was having fun. It looked like this was just another fun activity that he has among the many other he has (band, karate, guitar, video games, etc.). So one day I asked him "Are you really having fun?" He said "oh yeah!" So then I asked him "Well...do you ever see yourself riding on the street?" To which he answered "Yeah! that's what this is all about isn't it?" hahahaha....good boy.
Cory was the same. He's a pretty laid back guy, very laconic in manner. So I asked him too "Are you really having fun?" And much to my shock and surprise (and delight!) he said "Yeah, I can see doing this for the rest of my life." hahahaha...good boy.
One of my biggest dreams is to go on a motorcycle road trip with my sons. I always wanted to do that with my Dad but we never got the chance. If I could just go on one long trip with my sons...omg..I would be soooo happy.

My son is a high school English teacher so most of the people he knows are women so he asked me to be his best man. Somehow I just could not see throwing my son a bachelor party. So we settled on a road trip. We rode from the Charlotte, NC area all the way up to Ausable, NY on the west side of Lake Champlain, took a ferry across the lake to Burlington, VT and then down the fabled RT 100 and back home. A 9 day trip neither of us will forget. I was on my 2008 Hypermotard and he was on his 1995 900 SS/SP. Good times for sure. He got out of motorcycles when he started having children but now he has my old KTM 690 Duke and we get to ride occasionally.

During the very first outing ever on the XR50, after getting the basics down, my son was cruising around the flat pasture they have at the track. He was circulating pretty good so I started riding beside him on the CR85. Just as I pulled ahead of him, he target fixated on a big bush/tree and ran square into it. By the time I got turned around, he was buried so deep in the weeds I couldn't even see him. Of course, my heart was in my throat as I dove in to pull him out.
He had a bright strawberry red rash across the full width of his throat but that was it. It looked far worse than what it was. But it did look bad. I asked him if he wanted to keep riding and he said he did. I cleaned all the dirt out of the rash, wrapped a bandana around his throat, and sent him out again. And we had a fun day of riding. Of course I took a picture of it but didn't send it to my wife until we were on the way home.
ooooh boy was she furious!!! My son is her prince. I mean, he is THE favored son/person/living entity in our house by far. She said "That's IT!!! HE'S DONE!!! He's NEVER riding again!!!" I just brushed that off.
Two weeks later we were in a Honda dealership and they had a CRF125FB, the Big Wheel version. I told him to go sit on it and I took a picture and sent it to my wife with the following text..."Andy wants this." She texted me back "Here's $1500.00 to get it." BWAHAHAHAHAHA.....

The Z-50 at age 4, a TTR-125, DR-650, then anything with 2 wheels he could get a hold of.
He’s probably the youngest to ‘crash’ a Ducati.

Cool topic! 😄

I keep several bikes ready, inc aside her wants to go for a ride, but their lives catch up.
Encourage that ride sooner, while YOU are able!!
My other one now has 3 children..barely has time to say hello. Damn they grow fast!

Mario

Aiiiiight, I hope you all know I’ve been racing for decades and have close to 10 years in minis with my kids. Recently Max, now 14 started riding bigger bikes too. He won the 300ss championship this year riding a Ninja250 and then my 300.
Sorry just needed to jump in and brag on him a bit! His corner speed is good. Solid lean, just needs to be a bit more aggressive on the brakes.

I can't imagine where i'd be if my dad was providing me with sport bikes
and track time :)
Good work Tony!

That is sooo cool Brian! I don't know if my son will ever do a track day. I had my twins pretty late in life at 45 and the racing/track day part of my life was already past. As you guys know, I did the COTA track day in November because I just wanted to experience that track. I might do a couple more but I think that's about it. If I had had them younger, I'm sure we would've been involved in some kind of track activity. But later on If he wants to try track riding, I'll do everything in my power to help him.

Cool topic! 😄

Encourage that ride sooner, while YOU are able!!

Mario

Sorry just needed to jump in and brag on him a bit! His corner speed is good. Solid lean, just needs to be a bit more aggressive on the brakes.

It's funny because she HATES the track and doesn't come ever. MAYBE once a
season if I beg her. We had the conversation while we were racing minis.
She knows the risks, but my kids are pretty much homebodies so ANYTHING to
get them out of the house is a good thing. One time when we were
discussing a possible switch to Motocross, she famously said "Well, they
haven't broken any bones yet, it's probably about time." Tough broad, but
of course she doesn't get to see it live and in person and feel the
emotions!
My little guy (12) stopped riding entirely. Different strokes ya know?

As I mentioned earlier, I couldn't really tell if they were having fun. The whole point of it is to have fun. I thought maybe they were riding because I wanted them to, that they were just going along to please old Dad. So I told them both..."you know, you don't have to ride if you don't want to. You don't have to ride just because I love motorcycles so much. If you're not having fun, then don't ride."
As a consequence of that philosophy, I have to really pull back and hold my "wrestling coach" tongue when they're screwing around. If I came down on them like I used to on my wrestlers, they would most definitely NOT be having fun. hahahahaha.... But I do get serious if they're doing something dangerous and or stupid.
I tried to get my daughter (Andy's twin) involved and actually convinced her to ride on the back with me. We rode around the pasture at a really gentle pace but she didn't want to go again. She's happy staying home doing her art. I've been trying for years to get my wife riding too but that has been wholly unsuccessful. She's afraid that she will get hurt and then be unable to take care of our special needs daughter. That's a noble and practical measure to take but man...she would have so much fun, I just know it!
