Glad to hear you came out relatively unscathed and thank you for reminding us to go ATGATT.

Sadly, over the past few years, my eyes do not see the slight shadow contrast of road versus gravel, at speed, and I got caught out.

In and out of trees, early morning, I hit a patch of gravel going through a right hander, that I didn’t see. Both ends felt like they were on ice, being a bit of a dirt biker, especially riding on a lot of sand in FL, I fought the tank slapper down to about 10mph where I ended up on the grass verge on my side of the road. At which my front end just dug into the peat moss dirt and bought me to a quick soft stop. And although the bike tipped over it this soft, fluffy stuff, causing no damage, I got deposited back on the road and slammed my shoulder and face down into the road, good enough to trash my Shoei.

As a result, 40+ years after I started riding, I have decided to hang my leathers up. I may do a track day, here and there, but my desire to ride has been diminishing more as time goes by.

So I got a call today.  "The payment for the helmet and jacket have been authorized, oh and Mr. Hunt after review of the pictures and speaking with my supervisor this will be a no fault incident."

Thank You, I'll continue as a loyal customer then.

So the adjuster says we'll cover everything goes through some procedural stuff, asks for some pictures, and ends that he is writing it up as failure to control my motorcycle.

I lost it and told him a few choice things and finished with as a Certified Motorcycle Safety Instructor I would be prepared to testify that said motorcyclist had no available options. Had he seen the gravel he could execute no avoidance maneuvers, the entire roadway was covered in deep gravel. Further given the shaded nature of the roadway it was not visible and once on it, the reaction of the motorcycle was immediate as evidence by the fact that rider and motorcycle separated in less than 75 feet from the end of the gravel, which is less than a second.

I cannot help but wonder what his training is and if even rides.

That sounds like a lot of gravel to spill on the road and not flag or mark
off, or stay with until you call the highway patrol to come and flag it. It
also sounds like you were carrying a pretty good speed when you hit it. So
glad to hear you are okay and that the bike was not declared a total.
My two similar experiences were at much slower speeds. First on a
cloverleaf exit where what I thought was dried spilled paint was spilled
sand resulting in low side- sprained thumb and minor damage to bike, rode
it home. Second was riding the twisty back roads home in the rain when I
discovered just how friggin' slippery chip seal is when wet (it should be
banned). I totally got that now on ice feeling; traction went from
excellent to zero instantly. Reached the end of the chip seal, now going
much more sideways than before, traction returned, down I went. Broke
collarbone and a few bits on the bike with that one. Luckily, the tow truck
driver also rode, so he did a nice job of getting us both back home.
Yes, always wear your gear. Stay safe.

So the adjuster says we'll cover everything goes through some procedural
stuff, asks for some pictures, and ends that he is writing it up as failure
to control my motorcycle.

I lost it and told him a few choice things and finished with as a
Certified Motorcycle Safety Instructor I would be prepared to testify that
said motorcyclist had no available options. Had he seen the gravel he could
execute no avoidance maneuvers, the entire roadway was covered in deep
gravel. Further given the shaded nature of the roadway it was not visible
and once on it, the reaction of the motorcycle was immediate as evidence by
the fact that rider and motorcycle separated in less than 75 feet from the
end of the gravel, which is less than a second.

I cannot help but wonder what his training is and if even rides.

That sounds like a lot of gravel to spill on the road and not flag or mark off, or stay with until you call the highway patrol to come and flag it. It also sounds like you were carrying a pretty good speed when you hit it. So glad to hear you are okay and that the bike was not declared a total. I'll be switching to using my perforated leather jacket all the time. - Gene "I know a Few Roads" Charter Life Member American Motorcycle Association Charter Member Victory Motorcycle Club Member ducati.net<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fducati.net%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cd66e2ffab717462dc02f08d946178bcd%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637617889217392691%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=Fxa0XnNktnq45zHyg3eEOSPkjOyWWsbCZC%2Fbk3F%2FGtQ%3D&reserved=0> Ex MSF Instructor Patriot Guard Rider 01' Victory Sport Cruiser 04' Victory Kingpin 16' Victory Cross Country Tour 02' Ducati Monster 900 13' Ducati Diavel To get the links and updates on all today's Ducati news: http://www.ductalk.com/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ductalk.com%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cd66e2ffab717462dc02f08d946178bcd%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637617889217402648%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=4Vp%2BZkSeNj%2F%2FLsfZOF6VW43R4UcSD1ci8fibkHK3i5Q%3D&reserved=0> and https://www.facebook.com/ducnet<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fducnet&data=04%7C01%7C%7Cd66e2ffab717462dc02f08d946178bcd%7C84df9e7fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C637617889217402648%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=%2Bv9oQCSTIEf8LyEfxLY8LKVmeoIUbOfdBDsLxPaf6tY%3D&reserved=0> _____________________ Ducati mailing list -- ducati@list.ducati.net<mailto:ducati@list.ducati.net> To unsubscribe send an email to ducati-leave@list.ducati.net<mailto:ducati-leave@list.ducati.net> Mailto: %(user_address)s

And if anybody knows of a source for a Brown Merlin Odell Air leather jacket, size Euro 56, US 46, let me know Revzilla is out and Merlin says Mid-September before the next shipment will arrive. Thanks - Gene

Thanks and Progressive was very cooperative, replaced Helmet and Jacket as well as all the parts. I was able to find NOS for some of the pretty rare parts. I think I'll be able to ride again by the weekend. - Gene

I was on a well-used route called Lovettsville Rd, major gravel covering the complete width of the road and about 15' in length. I was traveling about 60 MPH, the gravel was in the shadows I did not even see it until I was on it, front end was floating back and forth and must have been pointed to the right when we hit clear pavement cause it high sided and spit me off, landed on top of helmet and right shoulder. No worries, my ol' Friend. I've been out of touch for a couple of weeks and
didn't see your note until this morning.

Never a dull moment in retirement.

My beloved Victory Sportccruiser, a rare beast. They only made them 2
years 2000-2001. Mine is a 2001 Speed Yellow with White Stripes, there are
only 30 made in that color combo. An example of that bike was used to do
the sighting lap for 2 years for every AMA Superbike Race.

I was riding that bike to go to the Barbara Fritchie Classic, oldest
motorcycle race in USA. I had a good riding buddy, Bill Bowen, who was
riding his Sportcruiser to meetup with Nora and I, also on my Sportcruiser,
in 2008. Bill had a heart attack on the way and passed on the scene. We
adopted the road where he passed and do road cleanup 3 times a year and I
always ride my Sportcruiser to that race.

Wow! Sorry to hear about this, Gene.

I was up in Malibu about 20+ years ago and had a similar experience. Hit
sand while leaned over mid turn. Shady area and never saw it. High side and
landed on my head. Was unconscious for 15 minutes or so, until the
paramedics arrived. Life flight to UCLA trauma center and kept under
observation. Took months for my memory to get back to whatever can be
considered normal. Short term memory was the issue

Glad to hear you came out of this in one piece.

What bike were you riding?
