Hi all!
A listener reminded us recently that Cambria is pronounced CAM-bree-ah, not
“CAME”-bree-ah. It’s always a good reminder, so we’re pronouncing it
consistently and correctly.
If you want to check out a fun story about the town’s pronunciation and
history, here’s an award-winning piece that Randol White did for us about
it in 2015:
Ciao!

I think the name to think of is Camelot when supposedly saying Cambria correctly.
However...I moved to SLO in 1965. I know people who were born in Cambria and they say Came-bria. Just wondering if the disgruntled listener is a Cambria native, or if they grew up there, or if they're an LA transplant.

The listener is from here. As are the many natives who correctly say
CAM-bree-ah. Did you check out Randol’s story? It was LA transplants
(developers) who started calling it CAME-bree-ah back in the late 1920s.
That’s why many people have been mispronouncing it for generations.

I moved to Cambria in 1978. And at that time there were three classes of
residents: came-Brians. Cam-Brians. And cum-Brians. And each class knew
their pronunciation was the correct one.
But it’s been so long that it’s hard to recollect off top of my head but
each category also corresponded as to whether they were of Artist ilk,
immigrants from urban world, nativists etc. at the time one immediately
knew from which camp they affiliated with.

Ha ha
Very interesting converation thread here. I would say we are not as bad as the Swiss, who have three completely different ways of saying every City in their country.
Take Basel for example:
Some Swiss call it Bale (as if they were pronouncing Ball in French). Some call it Basel (with a german accent) and others still call it Basilea (with an Italian accent). And EVERY city has these three competely different pronunciations unless you get deep into Graubunden where Romansch is spoken and then you even get a fourth barely comprehensible pronunciation. For example, Sumvitg is somehow pronounced, Soom_vitch.
The CityNerd (a popular you tube blogger) says that on the Central Coast we manage to pronounce everything as if we didn't know the Spanish language ever existed. Ha Ha. And I think there is some truth to that. He makes fun of the way we say Higuera, for example.
In my own humble opinion, we seem to find the middle ground between truly Spanish (like the way David Figueroa correctly pronounces San LUIS Obispo), and the totally anglicized version one gets from the rest of the US (San Louie...). So, what is correct? I guess I am discovering that there is more than one way to skin a cat, but I prefer to toggle between the truly Spanish and the middle ground we typically find here, while avoiding the overly anglicized.
So, I woud say either the Spanish Cam_BRIE_ah...Cam (as in Comma) Brie (as in the cheese) and Ah with an emphasis on the cheese...or the middle ground Cam_Bria, whilst avoiding CAME_bria. But like I said, there always seems to be more than one way to skin a cat.
