The reason I am interested is that my relatives would have been in Sunday School in Newtownstewart , Ardstraw Parish, Church of Ireland, just shortly after this time. The kids were Thomas Chambers b: 1821. My 2nd gg father George Chambers b: 1824. My 2nd gg uncle Mary Ann Chambers b: 1828. My 2nd gg Aunt Can you find them in the Strabane Morning Post? The Strabane Morning Post is not available online: I first accessed hard copy of this great newspaper at the British Library, London in 1993 and it contains great treasure. The many issues (1812-37) have been transcribed and is available as an e-book (Strabane and West Ulster in the 1800s) at www.cotyroneireland.com/estore/index.php?maincat_id=9<http://www.cotyroneireland.com/estore/index.php?maincat_id=9> CoTyroneIreland E-Books<http://www.cotyroneireland.com/estore/index.php?maincat_id=9> County Tyrone & Ulster E-Books for download www.cotyroneireland.com The article posted yesterday is a report listing the award winners at the Ardstraw Church of Ireland Sunday School, not a list of students. I would be most surprised if your forebears attended this school; Sunday schools offered a very basic education for the children of the labouring poor, fees not being charged as teaching was gratuitous. The Ordnance Survey Memoirs (Vol. 5, Tyrone 1) for Ardstraw Parish was compiled in 1831 and contains data regarding the many schools in the parish. The Parochial School in Mill Street, Newtownstewart had an enrolment of 46 pupils (40 males and 6 females) offering a fee-paying education for the children of the gentry, merchants and prosperous farmers. As regards the Sunday school the Memoirs record an attendance of 100 pupils. Additionally, there were two Presbyterian, a Methodist and a Catholic day school in the village. Of course, it is with certainty that no roll books and or lists of students have survived, apart from the interesting list of prize winners - it is so long ago.
