Well ignition should be easy to check, pull plug ground see if it sparks.
Still can be fuel. Have you pulled the assembly out of bottom of tank,
checking hoses, pump etc? I have replaced so many fuel pumps and lines and
filters over the years Chris Kelly on speed dial. :)
I am sure after dragging my feet doing belts on 996R I will get to tank and
find something amiss there. Course as you surmised spark or fuel...
sometimes injectors can be an issue but that would be last thing to
suspect. Years ago with dual injectors on an old 916/955 doing some work,
and resulting backfires, noticed on crank that fuel was dripping on floor,
stripped everything down and found one of the plastic lines going to
injector was obviously burned by a backfire and pinhole, crank and fuel
shot across the room. Good thing I stopped cause was getting ready to set
the whole thing afire I think. One day after 300 miles of riding, stopped
and parked and when went back out nothing happening, same thing crank but
no start and then fuel running out of bottom of tank, line from overflow
through tank and out bottom had come loose and fuel running out of
tank...duh. I was at BMW dealership and bunch of BMW guys stood around and
watched me pull tank, remove flange find and reattach line in the parking
lot with only tools in tool pouch in 5 minutes saving enough fuel that all
was well. Why so good at that job, had been inside that tank too many times
cause always was something starting with those crappy fuel level sensors.
Spark plugs old school test and been ages since I hooked up pressure gauge
to fuel lines to check fuel pressure...but it is an option as well, a bit
of plumbing as T required. But at some point if you can see fuel inside
intake ports...still a surprise if you use starting fluid and nothing
happening, my bet it is spark issue. Sine not one cylinder firing that has
to be something controlling both have never had computer go bad on a Duc
though. But...is that P8? R

Subject: 748 just will not start
Greeting all,
I have had a 97 748 since 1998 and while she has not been trouble free
over the last 40K miles she does always start..But not today..She did run
back in November when I did the oil and filter.
The battery is good and she does prime when I it click it to start. I
changed the relays under the seat any way As I had them and they have
failed in the past. I also put in fresh plugs just in case.
The main and starter fuses are good but WTH I changed them any way.
Fuel lines are tight and secure under the tank and the battery
connections are clean and tight.
I though I would ask for ideas of things to check as the only other thing
I can think of is the hall effect sensor spacing..I have not check that yet
though..
Any other ideas? The bike cranks but will not pop or bang even with ether
starter fluid witch leave me to think it may be an ignition issue.
Many thanks for your input..
Eric

Another issue this brings to mind is the fuel pump hose coming loose in the
tank, resulting in the fuel pump pumping gas from the tank back into the
tank! Open the fuel cap, peek inside as you turn the ignition switch, if
you see fuel squirting around the inside of the tank when it attempts to
prime thats the issue. Good luck.
