Although many of our Members were not affected, our List suffered another
bout of ‘unsubscribing’ a large number of members. While I am far from
being an expert on this issue; however, I’ll do my best to share my
knowledge and hope it helps us continue on a more solid footing.
These issues come up from time to time it seems. I believe this is the
third time since the inception of the list which is very frustrating, to
say the least, as the solution seems to get more complex each time. I
delved deeper into the issue this time than normal as an ‘ounce of
prevention’. It seems a part of the problem is simply the evolution of
internet security……… as hackers become more adept, programmers have to make
changes to tighten up the spam rules.
There are a few things each of us can do to help prevent ‘user-caused’ spam
issues.
Let’s look at this from a few angles:
- Why does a CTI List email get marked as SPAM?
- Host system’s spam filter ‘sees’ some wording which is suspicious
- Why does your email address get unsubscribed?
- Your email address becomes ‘invalid’ OR your email host marks it as
SPAM. Your host notifies our system which logs the event. Our system will
attempt to deliver email to you for the next 5 times before
‘unsubscribing’
your address
- Your email host is the organization shown after the ‘@’ sign in
your address. My email is jamckane@gmail.com; therefore, my email
host is ‘gmail.com’
- Are some email addresses more prone to problems?
- Yes, from my perspective, it does seem so.
- It seems all Microsoft addresses – hotmail, msn, outlook, live –
are much more likely to cause a problem than many others
- I have never seen a ‘gmail’ address unsubscribed unless it was an
invalid address
- How can YOU as the user help prevent this from happening?
- Be sure that cotyronelist@list.cotyroneireland.com is added to
your approved senders/white list with your Host. If you can’t find that
list, please contact your email Host.
- Be very careful emptying your SPAM/Junk Mailbox!
- By that I mean, DO NOT simply mass delete items in your
SPAM/Junk Mailbox! It is possible YOUR system might move a
CTI List email
to your SPAM/Junk box in error.
- When that happens, you MUST mark it as ‘NOT SPAM’ which will
send it to your Inbox; otherwise, you’ve already begun the
process of being
Unsubscribed!
- How can you change your email address on the CTI List?
- Very easily! Simply send your current CTI List email address along
with the new one to me at jamckane@gmail.com
If you have any questions, please drop me a note.
Happy Searching
