CTI Mailing List Query

Hi all,

I've personally visited graveyards in Tyrone and Armagh and too many of
the inscriptions are illegible. The ravages of weather and lichen have
wrecked their all on them. The older sandstone headstones seem unable to
last longer than mid 19thC.

But all is not lost. Oblique lighting can enhance the engravings. Either
get the sun to do that for you (if you arrive at the right time of day,
or are super patient)  or bring your own floodlight. My son uses that
technique to photo-record Australian aboriginal rock art with some
stunning successes. It's surprising just how legible some inscriptions
can become under the right light direction. A powerful flash-light
works, but only over a small area, so multiple photos are required, and
you'll need a helper to hold the light.

Royal Artillery. His son, James Quigley, was married in the Drumquin
Presbyterian Church in 1848. I was hoping to find a gravestone for Andrew
and also see if maybe he had any children buried near him that I haven't
found other records for.

I have been in contact with the minister at that church, and he said there
was a cemetery, but no death records. Does anyone have a researcher to
recommend to look through the cemetery for me?

I agree with Dave that the Kabristan bookshop books / pdfs are very
useful having had the ones for County Leitrim for many years as they have
helped to confirm & add to the research for my Wife’s Ancestors as they had
a large presence in that County.

Another very useful resource is www.igp-wweb.com which has listings with
photos of many graveyards. The link for Tyrone is:

There are some e-books that can be purchased where people have
transcribed various graveyards... I had several "good hits" which have
later been proven accurate via picture sent to me.

The e-book I purchased is for County Leitrim, though I see many other
counties including Tyrone listed:

https://kabristanbookshop.com/product/ireland-publications/county-leitrim-burials-from-1760-part-3-pdf-format/

I don't know if there are other sources for this data, I purchased this
(only £5!) early in my genealogy work.

Based on a quick search I do see a link here which lists MANY graveyards
by county, and indicates whether published online or not (change the county
name in the URL if you want something different, or just use the site
search):

https://www.johngrenham.com/records/county_graveyards.php?search_type=full&county=Tyrone

Ideally some of this is useful!

Katherine,

My guide to Presbyterian congregations says there has been one at
Drumquin since the 1600s. It also mentions that a new church was built
between 1860 – 1863 after which the old church became the Manse (ie the
Minister’s home). I would guess therefore that the graveyard does go back
earlier than 1845.

Presbyterians generally didn’t keep burial records so there are unlikely
to be any paper records for who is buried there. You just have to hope
there’s a legible gravestone. You could try writing to the Minister to see
if anyone has ever transcribed them or if he knows of a grave for your
family. Otherwise you may just have to pay a researcher to go and look.

Not every Minister replies to these enquiries. Some get rather more
genealogical enquiries than they feel able to deal with. On the other hand
some are very obliging.

Jim - I have found all the above-mentioned records on James and Andrew (and more) as I have been working on finding information on them for 4-5 years now. I really think that the information I need at this point is not online, so I will need to look to other resources.

Hello guys

Top of the morning to you all.

Just coincidentally this popped up in a news alert earlier, sent to me by a cousin in Derry ....

From an article on RTE.ie ....

[ https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2023/0531/1386521-irish-dog-foods-to-create-150-jobs-with-20m-investment/ | https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2023/0531/1386521-irish-dog-foods-to-create-150-jobs-with-20m-investment/ ]

"..... Owned by the Arrow Group Irish Dog Foods was established in 1985. It is led by Liam Queally and employs around 370 people in Ireland. ...."

A less swiggly spelling for "Quigley" perhaps ...?

Katherine, hope this may lead you to more records. We're all Irish and we share the challenges!

Warm regards

Katherine,

My guide to Presbyterian congregations says there has been one at Drumquin since the 1600s. It also mentions that a new church was built between 1860 – 1863 after which the old church became the Manse (ie the Minister’s home). I would guess therefore that the graveyard does go back earlier than 1845.

Presbyterians generally didn’t keep burial records so there are unlikely to be any paper records for who is buried there. You just have to hope there’s a legible gravestone. You could try writing to the Minister to see if anyone has ever transcribed them or if he knows of a grave for your family. Otherwise you may just have to pay a researcher to go and look.

Not every Minister replies to these enquiries. Some get rather more genealogical enquiries than they feel able to deal with. On the other hand some are very obliging.

Hello Katherine

Very few Presbyterian churches in Cos Tyrone and Donegal had their own graveyards and did not commence to gain them until  the 1870s onwards. Prior to this, the usual burial place for Presbyterians was the parish graveyard (generally attached to the parish (Church of Ireland) church.) Noting that the earliest date on headstones at Drumquin (Longfield East parish) is 1872, Drumquin congregation seems to fit into this basket.

The Pattons and Quigleys both farmed in Wilmount townland which is in Longfield West Parish, so I would expect their burial places to be at the old Longfield West parish church. The surviving registers have been filmed and available at PRONI, Belfast: LONGFIELD WEST C.I. Langfield Lower (Derry diocese) [Earliest registers destroyed in Dublin] Baptisms, 1809-10; marriages, 1845 1934; marriage notices, 1906 74;burials, 1878-1981; vestry minutes, 1810-29 and 1870-1900; minute book, 1880-91.

Hope this assists and perhaps clarifies the situation,

Len Swindley

Hi all,

I've personally visited graveyards in Tyrone and Armagh and too many of

But all is not lost. Oblique lighting can enhance the engravings. Either
get the sun to do that for you (if you arrive at the right time of day,
or are super patient)  or bring your own floodlight. My son uses that
technique to photo-record Australian aboriginal rock art with some
stunning successes. It's surprising just how legible some inscriptions
can become under the right light direction. A powerful flash-light
works, but only over a small area, so multiple photos are required, and
you'll need a helper to hold the light.
