Hello County Tyrone listers,
Hoping someone might be able to help out with some suggestions. I was recently contacted by a previously unknown cousin of my husband who is planning a trip to County Tyrone this summer. She is looking for places to visit that might be close to the family’s ancestral home in Cooel.
Thomas Coulter (b. 1785) and his wife Isabelle Clendenning (b. 1785) were both from County Tyrone. According to family history, they moved to the US, via Canada, in about 1818. Thomas’s parents were thought to be John Coulter (b. abt 1760) and unknown Culbertson (Ancestry trees have her name as Sharon, but I haven’t seen any evidence that it is true). Thomas’s siblings were Wiliam, John & James. William remained in County Tyrone, and had children who married into the Wilson, Speer, and Lammy families in County Tyrone. No further information regarding John or James, but it is believed that they also moved to America.
I believe that they were Presbyterian.
A mutual ancestor did a lot of research trying to trace the family in County Tyrone. Her last correspondence was with Mrs. Robert Coulter, Cooel, Drumquin in 1968. All efforts to contact the family in the 1970’s was futile.
We would truly appreciated any suggestions/assistance that anyone might be able to provide.
Thanks!
Barb Coulter
Barb,
Cooel is part of Coolavannagh townland, or an alternative name for it.
Today that’s on the Glen Rd outside Drumquin. I see a death for a
William Coulter in Cooel on 3.2.1884 aged 67. His son William was the
informant.
There’s this 1 Coulter family there in 1901:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Clunahill/Coolavannagh/1722817/
Son Samuel was born at Cooel on 15.4.1872, and from that birth
certificate I can see his parents were William Coulter & Catherine
Wilson. You can see where the family farmed using the maps on the
Griffiths Valuation site:
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml
Use the slider bar in the top rh corner to overlay a modern map on the
contemporaneous one.
Same family in 1911:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Tyrone/Clunahill/Coolavannagh/852722/
Drumquin Presbyterian church only has records from 1845 onwards so
there are unlikely to be any records for the births of your John
Coulter c 1760 etc. There’s no Coulter family farming in Cooel in the
1826 tithes. There was a William farming in Curraghamulkin which is
not too far away. I have no way of saying whether he’s the William who
stayed in Ireland.

Hello Barb,
In addition to Elwyn’s excellent and speedy response, may I offer a little further information that may be new to your research. As Elwyn stated, Drumquin Presbyterian registers (marriages and baptisms) commence rather late – 1845. Sad. However, the marriages listed below (my own extractions) may be useful:
DRUMQUIN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (LONGFIELD EAST PARISH)
#4
December 3 1845
DANIEL BLAIR 35 years bachelor merchant Omagh. Father: JOHN BLAIR preacher
&
MARGARET COULTER 20 years spinster Drumquin. Father: JOHN COULTER farmer

MATTHEW SPEER 21 years bachelor farmer Lack. Father: THOMAS SPEER farmer

ROBERT BURNS full age bachelor grocer Drumnaforbe, Upper Langfield. Father: JOSEPH BURNS weaver?

Witnesses: WILLIAM WILSON & MARY SPROULLE
Re. the entry for John Colter & partners (brothers?) recorded at Curraghamulkin in the 1826 Longfield West tithe applotment book, it is most likely that this is the same family as Cooel and Curraghamulkin are separated only by Dooish Mountain, Cooel being a more advantageous lease.
Trust this is helpful/ useful?

Hi Barbara,
Hope you are well, I am doing family research on behalf of my husband, and I have come across your messages mentioning a Mrs Robert Coulter from Cooel.
My husband was never introduced to his dad’s side of the family. So he does not know much. Would you have any information on them by any chance?
From what I have researched, we have the following:
My husband - Adam
His father Samuel Alexander born Cooel 1949
Samuel’s mother Sarah Frances Graham (born Drumquinn 1928, passed 2023)
Samuel’s father Robert Herbert Coulter (presumed dead)
Sarah’s death certificate stated she was divorced.
Samuel has two siblings that we know of, Olive and Cecil, Cecil passed in 2020.
Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there,
I was just sitting down looking at my emails when the Coulter name jumped out at me! Always a surprise!
My husband is actually the Coulter descendant. I do have a fairly extensive tree on Ancestry, if you are a member there. Otherwise, I could add you as a viewer, if you’d like.
I have done some research on the family, but I am also in possession of a family history of the Coulter family which his aunt compiled in the 1990’s or so. It may not be entirely accurate, but it may give you some added information. If you are interested in taking a look, I can either add it to a Google docs file, or Dropbox or something similar.
Please let me know. My husband has no real interest, so I haven’t done a lot of extensive research.
Thanks,
Barb Coulter

Hi Boyd and other researchers,
According to my husband’s aunt’s research:
John Coulter was born in County Tyrone, about 1760, married ? Culbertson, whose father was a minister from Scotland. They were my husband’s 4th great grandparents.
They had 4 children that we know of:
William - remained in Ireland. His children were all born in County Tyrone (Cooel?) and married others with surnames of Coulter, Wilson, Burris, Speer, de Lamme and Mitchell. Some remained in Ireland, others moved to Australia or the United States.
James - went to Quebec
Thomas - went to Ohio (This was my husband’s ancestor)
John - went to America - unknown place.
I have some correspondence between the American Coulters and their Irish cousins, but is seems that contact was mostly lost in the 1970’s. The aunt’s research also included a photo of a home in Drumquin (possibly).
Hopefully this will be of interest to other researchers. I have plenty of info on the American portion of the family, but not so much on their Irish cousins….
Cheers,
Barb Coulter
