Last summer I was riding with some friends thru Red Rock Canyon and we met a guy at Blue Diamond Cafe on a Ducati Scrambler (this was before the DesertX was released) His bike had knobby tires, a skid plate and it was obvious it had been ridden off road a lot. We asked him how good it worked in the desert and he said it was good, plenty of power and maneuverability and better than the BWM GS’s that his friends rode.  He did have a lot of problems with the bike, the frame broke twice, both foot pegs broke off and had to be re-welded on, an engine case cracked and the motor seized. He also said the dealer stopped supporting it even though it was still under warranty. The dealer said he was using it for something it wasn’t designed for, and he countered that Ducati showed it riding off road in all of their advertising.
I wonder if they fixed all of the problems he was having for the DesertX?

Hey Brian,

It sounds like the guy was riding a regular Scrambler, not a Desert Sled. The Desert Sled had additional parts welded to the original Scrambler frame to make it a lot stronger. The swingarm was also lengthened by 2" to give it more stability. The Sled has got a LOT beefier suspension, adjustable at both ends, as well.  The suspension also adds about 4-5 inches of additional ground clearance.  The only thing that broke that could've been avoided had he been riding a Desert Sled is the engine seizing.
