Our family always surmised it was a connection to the Orange movement that resulted in two relatives having their given names as "Orange": Orange Hagan Boak (1867-1947) and Orange Elmer Emery (1855-1945).

PatIt might be worthwhile contacting the museum of orange heritage in Belfast at www.orangeheritage.co.uk They are closed at the minute though.  I don't know if they hold historic records, but they should be able to provide some guidance.
It's disappointing that the Orange Lodge in Durham wasn't in a position to release basic records from 150 years ago, difficult to see what the privacy issues would be so long ago.   Personally I'd ask them again, or contact their 'umbrella' body in Canada.  I'm sure lots of historians would appreciate access to some at least  of those early records.

My ancestor belonged to the Orange Lodge in Durham, Ontario, where he died in 1860.  I’m guessing he was also a member in Omagh, Tyrone before emigrating to Canada.  I wrote to the Order in Ontario some years ago, asking if they had any information about him and received a very curt reply, indicating that they didn’t divulge anything about their membership.  I wonder if there are any lists or other information from Omagh, pre-1840?

Thank you.

This file is interesting as Lodge 633 commenced in Ballymagorry, Co. Tyrone, but was withdrawn as the result of a “scandal” (as described to me by the archivist at the Freemasons’ Hall in Dublin) and a warrant was issued to a lodge to meet in in the townland of Killymallaght just across the county boundary in Co. Londonderry. (Several members of this lodge were draw from townland families). This lodge was later located to Derry City.

I have come across some Orange Lodge records in PRONI. The few that I have seen have been very scant. Often financial notes about fees collected and the odd fine for non attendance etc. Dates of meetings. Some names but no townlands or other identifying information. Often years would pass with no records at all. Nothing in them that would really advance knowledge of your family much.
