Thanks, Len.
Here is an image of the original scan of the church registry, purchased
recently from PRONI.
And a closeup of the term "Dowen bridge".
And an image of the full page is attached.
Gratitude for confirming that it was typical for a family to walk 4-5 kms
to get to their church.
Apologies for not including the Parish. I did know it from searching
townlands.ie.
My reason for researching these families is to make the connection between
2 of my shared DNA matches, in hopes that I can then find my link to them.
The three of us have already determined that the answer for them lies with
the marriage of Margaret Jane BEATTIE to Charles PATTERSON at Crossroads
Presby on 22 Nov 1866.
(I have no Beatties' or Patterson's in my tree so far.)
We have lots of information about Charles' lineage, and we know that their
3 children were born in Dunbreen, Cappagh.
However, none of us can find reliable records for Margaret Jane's
birth/baptism.
What we do know is:
My search request to PRONI was specifically to find the birth/baptism of
Margaret Jane using the microfilm for Crossroads Presby (since that is
where she married Charles), and I provided them with the above information.
The only record that they found for a child of John
Beattie/Beatty/Beatie/Beaty, etc. was the one for William, so I'm hoping
that he is Margaret Jane's brother.
(They did give me copies of other BEATTIE/BEATTIE births, but they are all
after William's in 1838 and the father is not John.
Today I've asked PRONI to extend their search back a little farther to see
if it uncovers Margaret Jane or more children of John Beattie of Dowen
Bridge.
If they are not successful at Crossroads I'll ask them to check another
Presby register.
The question about where Dowen Bridge is located is an effort to target the
closest Presby Church to Margaret's father John's location.
If it's in Omagh proper, that might be a whole different kettle of fish.
I appreciate your suggestion to search the individual records on the
Cappagh Parish page.
I've been using the general search for all of the above terms.
Using the Cappagh page should help me expand my general knowledge of the
families in those areas.
I did realize that PETTEN would be PATTON. I should have mentioned that in
my query.
I did indeed check newspaper transcriptions at CoTyrone (I always check
there first).
I also have a subscription to Newspapers.com.
In gratitude for the tremendous work you do for our community

Jeanne, where does the baptism record come from: an original register
image or a modern transcription? Such transcriptions can be risky as to
accuracy (few researchers seem adept at interpreting ye olde copperplate
handwriting. Do you have any further records to compare the entry?
It is important to quote the parish of interest when seeking assistance;
in your instance it is CAPPAGH. Crossroads/ Mountjoy is one of several
Presbyterian congregations within the parish.
I have submitted 27 files of Cappagh genealogical data to CTI
www.cotyroneireland.com/menus/cappagh.html - have you referred to these
records? The 1826 Tithe Applotment Book records eight BEATTY (as spelt)
families residing mostly in the adjoining townlands of Dunbreen and
Kingarrow, 4-5 kms from Crossroads Church (people thought little of walking
that distance in order to attend religious services, and of course there
was always the farm cart used by better-off families.) I suggest you peruse
my files. John's wife is quoted as Petten, but this will be PATTON:
there are two Patton families recorded in the close-by townlands of
Carrigans and Ballykeel. All these townlands are situated closer to
Newtownstewart than Omagh.
You enquire re. newspapers from that time and I'm hoping you will find my
extensive transcriptions from the Strabane Morning Post and Londonderry
Sentinel useful and interesting. It's all waiting for you! Can you supply
a copy of the original entry contained in the register?

Subject: [CoTyroneMailingList] Dowen Bridge near Omagh
Does anyone have any information about an area close to Omagh that was
called Dowen?
I have a baptism record from Crossroads Presbyterian Church (now known as
Mountjoy):
William son to John BEATTIE of Dowen Bridge
Mother name PETTEN
21 Oct 1838
I'm wondering where Dowen is/was specifically. How far from the Church
might it have been? How far did people travel back then to get to their
church?
A Google and Google Maps search for Dowen in Tyrone finds nothing.
I also looked for it on a zoomed-in digital page from the 1985 OSI map of
the area (thanks again James Huey!) and couldn't find it.
Then I asked Gemini to find something and here's what I was told:
The name "Dowen" is connected to a small stream and an area within County
Tyrone, particularly near the town of Omagh. It's possible the bridge
you're thinking of is in that vicinity.
Are there any particular newspapers that might have covered the area
around that time?

Hi Jim
I had no idea CTIG hosted trees. I’ve been and read the info there and I
just wanted to ask…
What are the benefits for me and for CTIG and other subscribers if I were
to put up a tree?
Happy Easter to all
With thanks

WOW, Chris, your opening statement - "I had no idea CTIG hosted trees"
blows me away!
AND is of huge concern to us as the link to 'Supporters' Family Trees' is
on the homepage as well as the main page for every county.
It makes us wonder what else do our supporters miss seeing?
Do our supporters only visit the new pages as they are announced without
looking at our main menus?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm???
Anyway to your questions....... 'the benefits for me' -
- YOU are the only person who can alter, add or remove any of your data
- no one can connect other people or trees to your data
- you are not helping direct traffic to a corporate website
- possibly a 'long lost cousin' will see your tree and make contact
- your tree is fully visible to the internet world at NO COST to you
...... 'the benefits........ for CTIG'......
- here I'm assuming you mean CoTyroneIreland.com (aka CTI)
- your tree may possibly attract a new user who finds your tree via a
search of the internet
- otherwise, CTI obtains no benefit
Hopefully this answers your concerns. If not, please respond.
Thanks for your support

Subject: [CoTyroneMailingList] Re: FREE Family Tree Hosting
Dear Jim and CTI subscribers
The offering of CTI hosted family trees is a significant and generous
service provided by CTI. It is simple to use, well-laid out and has
excellent search functions. It is a site worth MUCH wider exposure for
those researching families in Co. Tryone and their diaspora.
I first put my Wilson tree up in 2023, I believe. I have no record of
someone reaching out to me, having first found my CTI hosted tree. I am
wondering how the individual family tree website is optimized for web
searches? Or maybe the link to Supporters' Family Trees just needs larger
exposure on the various pages?
This is an amazing service that I suspect is under-utilized. Thank you to
Jim and those who built and maintain it.
