My forebears rented farm land near Dungannon from Abercorn in the 19C.
Not an easy life. However, Baronscourt is another matter, I think I
could comfortably enjoy living there in 1840.  Yet so isolated - no
internet 😁. Thanks Len, Gordon

Thanks Gordon.

Baronscourt is certainly a grand residence

I was unaware that the Abercorns had an estate near Dungannon. There is no reference to any East Tyrone holdings in William Roulston's superb Abercorn: The Hamiltons of Baronscourt (Ulster Historical Foundation, 2014).  Interesting.

All the best,
Len

Hello Barbara,

Have referred to Introduction to the Abercorn Letters as Relating to Ireland 1736-1816 - John H. Gebbie (Strule Press, Omagh, 1972) and am unable to locate a reference to any Birneys. This 424-page publication contains extracts from a selection of the thousands of letters (archived in PRONI, Belfast) sent to the Marquis of Abercorn at his residences in London and Scotland by his agents in Ireland. The letters contain detailed information on economic, agricultural, political and social conditions in Cos. Tyrone and Donegal.
Thousands of tenants are named (generally those who had committed misdemeanours, sold their leases and emigrated, accepted a new lease or had been evicted). Thus, the Marquis was intimately acquainted with his tenants on his Tyrone and Donegal estates. Those tenants who paid their rents when due rarely are mentioned.
I guess you have viewed my approx 50 files of Abercorn data on CTI? www.cotyroneireland.com/menus/estate.htmlhttp://www.cotyroneireland.com/menus/estate.html

All the best,
Len

My forebears rented farm land near Dungannon from Abercorn in the 19C. Not an easy life. However, Baronscourt is another matter, I think I could comfortably enjoy living there in 1840.  Yet so isolated - no internet 😁. Thanks Len, Gordon

Hello Barbara, Have referred to Introduction to the Abercorn Letters as Relating to Ireland 1736-1816 - John H. I guess you have viewed my approx 50 files of Abercorn data on CTI? www.cotyroneireland.com/menus/estate.html<http://www.cotyroneireland.com/menus/estate.html> Estate Records & Papers<http://www.cotyroneireland.com/menus/estate.html> Estate Records & Papers www.cotyroneireland.com Thanks for your query, Barbara, Len Swindley Melbourne, Australia ________________________________ From: Barb Birney via CoTyroneList <cotyronelist@list.cotyroneireland.com> Sent: Tuesday, 15 November 2022 1:45 PM To: CoTyroneIreland.com Mailing List <cotyronelist@list.cotyroneireland.com> Cc: Barb Birney <birneyquest@live.com> Subject: [CoTyroneMailingList] Re: New Content - Abercorn Estate Salaries Paid 1859 & Townlands of the Manors of Cloghogle & Donelong There were Birneys at Baronscourt - one was apparently quite the dissolute rogue according to Abercorn accounts in PRONI. Good Evening, Louise,

I am unable to locate any links for an online version; Abercorn: The Hamiltons of Barons Court - William J. Roulston was published by the Ulster Historical Foundation in 2014. Looking at their bookstore I note that it is no longer available, so assume that it is now out of print. You could check out their website for any reference to it www.ancestryireland.comhttp://www.ancestryireland.com
