This album is just luscious. Arooj Aftab is from Pakistan, but moved to New York to study at Berklee School of Music. You can hear jazz, classical, electronic, and Sufi influences in her music. She won Best New Artist at the recent Grammys, and also won Best World Music Performance. She’s the first Pakistani to win a Grammy.
She has lots of fans globally, including former president Barack Obama, who included her on one of his lists of playlist favorites.
A side note: as a fellow list-maker, I really enjoy Obama’s Favorites lists, for both books and music. He has wide-ranging tastes, and I’ve discovered lots of cool new things from them. Killer content.
