Ducati has been dropping the new line info in a once a week web series , most recently the final episode, the Monster and Monster Plus.

It’s no longer a trellis frame and has lost 39.7 pounds compared to the Monster 821.  HP is 111 @ 9250RPM.

I have included a pic of the Monster Plus for anyone that might not have seen it.

Curious what you think…

It is a big deviation from the past but I can live with that for the
tremendous loss of weight.  I have found over the years a lightweight
modest powered bike is a lot more fun than a heavy power over loaded
monster pun intended.  I have seen some comparison to the Yamaha FZ07 but I
think that is a result of having a chassis inspired by the V4
Streetfighter.  I have not really considered an 821 because of its weight
versus my old S2R 1000.  Now this bike with all the neat features, hey self
cancelling turn signals.  might just get me on to a new Monster.  I like
the new exhaust and overall I like the bike.

And no beer tray, wet clutch, water cooled. But I could live with that if it didn't look like a Brutale, glad I still have my M900.

I agree with both Gene and Jim. It’s clearly Ducati’s attempt at a Brutale. Although it may well be a better bike it has lost all the parts that defined what a Monster was. They should have done a Monster FE and then given this new bike a new name befitting it’s new character.

It's a dead ringer for the Yamaha MT-07 and that is not a good thing.  Yes, the 39lbs loss is a great thing but a poster on the Ducati Facebook page said it best... "18Kg was the weight of its soul."  I myself do not like it at all.  It does not say "Ducati" to me in any way, shape, or form.  Speaking of the Ducati Facebook page, the feedback is OVERWHELMINGLY negative.  I would put it at 99.9% negative.

Usually when you have an iconic design, especially one that is responsible for the financial health of your company, you try and retain at least some visual continuity.  The new Mustang, VW Beetle, and Mini are the foremost examples I can think of.  They're modern with at least some visual cues to the past.  This thing has no "Monster" in it whatsoever.  I'm sure it's a great bike and is probably better dynamically in every way than the 821 but numbers don't tell the whole story.

Back to the Ducati Facebook page...someone, inevitably, brought up the 999/749 fiasco and how Ducati backtracked on that design.  Someone else responded, factually, that those bikes are now beginning to be appreciated.  To which another poster wrote perhaps the most eloquent description of the new Monster...."The 999 was ahead of its time, its design was too radical for most. This is neither ahead of its time nor radical, it’s simply more of the same thing we see from other major bike manufacturers. It’s worse than terrible, it’s inconsequential." - Jake Fuchs

This new Monster just makes me sad.

Conversely, I test rode the V2. Wow!  What a bike!!!  If I were younger and more flexible, I think I would have to find a way to add that to my garage.

I was just going to write more or less what Mario said there.

Reading the specs it sounds awesome. Looking at the bike, I don’t care and
I certainly don’t feel I HAVE to have one. Not only is it not a classically
‘Ducati styled’ motorcycle, it’s not even a particularly attractive bike
regardless of make.

Meh.

I dunno - it harkens to the streetfighter 1098/848 which I kind of hate -
but this is far better than either of those.  I also own an FZ07, so
perhaps I'm biased.  Interesting they use a single sided swingarm stand to
display the bike given it's a conventional arm right?

Biggest complaint for me is it seems bikes just keep getting taller
regardless of displacement, while I'm apparently getting shorter in my old
age!

I dunno - I dig it.  The Scrambler was a big sales success, and had little
to do with the old Scramblers too, right?

Not a fan of the new look at all, the /r/ducati group have been going Monster crazy the past few days: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ducati/ Paul On Mon, Dec 7, 2020 at 12:04 PM Tony Pags <ajpags@gmail.com> wrote: > I dunno - it harkens to the streetfighter 1098/848 which I kind of hate - > but this is far better than either of those. I agree. All I see is MV when I look at it. I can tell it’s a Ducati mainly because it says so right there on the tank. I suppose there are way worse things than looking like an MV Agusta. I think it’s a result of the changes in the way things are designed now. Where one person was the main designer now it’s more likely to be the product of a team drawing the pieces. I always thought that humans aspire higher when the whole thing is on one person. The 916 is a great example. Things like that don’t come from a committee. But the chance of failure is greater to the company when you have a star designer. The 999 was a great bike as was the first Multi but we all know how that went. Same guy drew the Supermono. Take a look at my Instagram @Vicki_Smith to see pure perfection, I posted one yesterday and it’s stupid beautiful. Also hard not to mention the power that designer acquires once they pen something iconic. The 1098 designer can tell you how that worked out for him. So here we are.

Meanwhile Frank Stevenson is designing race cars for a raceseries on the moon. It’s hard to control a great designer once the word gets out :-) Not even the sky’s the limit.

I agree with both Gene and Jim. It’s clearly Ducati’s attempt at a Brutale. Although it may well be a better bike it has lost all the parts that defined what a Monster was. They should have done a Monster FE and then given this new bike a new name befitting it’s new character.

Subject: [Ducati] 2021 Ducati lineup - Monster Plus

Ducati has been dropping the new line info in a once a week web series , most recently the final episode, the Monster and Monster Plus.

It’s no longer a trellis frame and has lost 39.7 pounds compared to the Monster 821. HP is 111 @ 9250RPM.

I have included a pic of the Monster Plus for anyone that might not have seen it.

Curious what you think…

Vicki

I kissed a Supermono last week during one of my regular visits.  Among all
others, that's the bike for my heart.  I'm a small bike guy as it is, and
it's just a weapon.
