Replacement bike ponderings (maybe Ducati content)

In following up on the storyline that continues after the Thursday night death of my ST1300, along with the death of the deer my son hit at about 45 mph while riding it (he has survived with no broken bones amazingly), I now have an opportunity to replace a bike I never really planned on replacing, but that being the case, I’m now educating myself in the same way I did 10 years ago by reading up on various bikes and again asking the collective experience of our group for opinions about what they’ve owned and liked/disliked in the sport touring class. I’m open to just about anything, so thanks in advance to anyone who cares to contribute thoughts. If this thread will clutter up the list world, I’m happy to hear from anyone privately.

Sorry to hear about your Honda ST.

When it came time to replace the ST3 I thought it would be a MTS but just could not get past the looks and sadly many of the great bikes that are perfect for Sport Touring looks the same way. But when I discovered that Shad made bags for the Diavel it was a perfect solution for me, I even have XM Radio Bluetooth to me SENA Headset. There are good examples of the Diavel around in the used market. Not sure if bags will be available for the new Diavel, I have not seen one in person yet but it looks like the rear section has changed so the current shad brackets probably won't work.

Just an idea. - Gene

I had an Aprilia Futura for 17 years, just replaced it with a KTM Super
Duke GT both are fantastic touring mounts that lean way over to the sport
side of the sport-touring equation but still handle Saddle Sore rides with
aplomb. I've gotten old/cautious enough that I appreciate ABS, traction
control, etc. which is why I finally made the jump. Electronic nannies
aside the Aprilia remains the most comfortable motorcycle I've ever ridden
on, and quite capable scratching canyons and blue highways.

Happy to answer any specific questions you might have about either bike.

If that SDGT wasn’t so expensive I might give it a go.  Oh and the side panniers won’t fit a helmet (I think?) which is kind of a bummer.

But it’s on my short list for sure. Whenever I decide to either love or leave this R1200RT anyway.

Steve,

I have owned many bikes, ST1100s, ST1300s, 996, 998, air cooled and water cooled Multistradas (current bike is a ‘14 Multistrada 1200 GT)

Some friends and I just completed a 2000+ mile ride through the European Alps and we rented 2019 BMW 1250 GSs.

I’m so sold. Best all around bike I’ve ever ridden. Just a thought.

But tall. Very tall.  Like I can’t reach the side stand tall.

How’s the long distance wind protection on the GS?  That’s always a concern for me on adv bikes.

Many of you know that the US Desmo "Ducks Head West" was this weekend in Erwin, TN. Many of you also know Stevo Ernst who is a regular attendee of all US Desmo events.

Stevo has reported that he and Randall (Stevo did not identify which US Desmo member Randall) were involved in a serious accident yesterday. Both are in serious condition in Johnson City, TN. Stevo reports that Randall is close to death.

I have no other info on this as Stevo post the initial report a bit over an hour ago.

I'm of relatively short stature myself and have stayed away from the GS for

I have - but only the GSA with a low seat, and that was still a bit too
tall.  A regular GS might work though.  I'm only 5'5".  Even the 800 GS is
way too tall!

So...

We thought the seat height would be an issue as well for one of our group. He is 5'6". The company we worked through (Adriatic Motorsports...excellent by the way...) provisioned a new 1250 GS for him with both a lower suspension and a lower seat and our 5'6" friend was completely comfortable on the bike and could touch both feet firmly to the ground with no issues.

As for wind protection, I found the airflow on the bike completely unobtrusive, comfortable to the point that I never really thought about it. No buffeting or related issues. That being said, it's not full coverage like an ST or bigger more touring oriented bike. I always found that my head stuck up high enough (I'm 6'3") over most fairings that unless I was on a BMW K1600...a bike I've spent some time on... or something big like that, I was always in air flow of one sort or another. The hand protectors are very effective.

Pags- BMW has several seats for the GS-

.
I'm of relatively short stature myself and have stayed away from the GS for this reason in the past.  Have you tried them with the low seat?

How’s the long distance wind protection on the GS?  That’s always a
concern for me on adv bikes.

Steve,

Some friends and I just completed a 2000+ mile ride through the
European

Alps and we rented 2019 BMW 1250 GSs.

I’m so sold. Best all around bike I’ve ever ridden. Just a thought.
