Thanks Len for this posting. There is a William Chambers of Lifford listed in the linen merchants that is of interest to me. My 3d great grandfather John Chambers (1796-1867) was a linen merchant in Newtownstewart. He raised a family there and he and his wife Martha (nee Maclear) are buried in the Church of Ireland cemetery at the top of the hill in the downtown. John would have been about 20 in 1816. I have never been able to find John’s father. This looks like a promising lead.

Hello Tom,
Yes, I recall your research in Newtownstewart. If you are expanding your search to Lifford, Co. Donegal, perhaps you should look into Richard Cowan Chambers, sub-sheriff of Co. Donegal and linen merchant; you can access relevant records on the CTI Search Every Name Index www.cotyroneireland.com/names.phphttp://www.cotyroneireland.com/names.php where there are several references plus further records for other Chambers in Lifford. These folk may be connected to your family.
Best of luck with your ongoing research and regards,
Len
