Hi all! I thought that I had sent this to the whole On Air list, but
apparently I didn’t, and everyone who does a music show live in our studio
should see it. Jim and Fred asked a great question about playing promos
from the Mini Array (on the same screen as Enco—to the right of the control
board) when there’s a show running simultaneously on Enco. Please see below
about the best way to play promos when you’re in studio.
Thanks!
Marisa

Good question! I always forget that people still use the mini array,
because most staff announcers just use the computer desktop (the same
monitor your playlist is on). That's what I recommend when there's another
show running on Enco concurrently with your live in-studio show (we keep
shows running in Enco as an emergency backup).
It's been a while, but at an on-air volunteer meeting pre-pandemic we
talked about how to use the promos on the MCR computer, and did a little
post-meeting demo for those who could attend. Here's how to do it:
· Open the folder labeled "On Air Promos" at the top of the MCR
computer desktop (the screen to the left of the control board)
· The promos are alphabetical. Choose the one you want by
double-clicking on it, which will open a player
· When you're ready to play the promo, make sure you select the
player with your cursor
· Anything you play from that computer will be on the channel
labeled "Computer" on the broadcast board
· Turn that channel on and up, then hit the space bar on the
computer keyboard to start the promo (or click on the "play" button with
your cursor, but the space bar is easier). If you haven’t selected the
player for the promo with your cursor, the space bar won’t start it.
· Close the player for that promo when you’re done
Also, on a regular basis we put promos on the right side of the MCR
computer monitor for upcoming specials, events, pledge drive announcements,
network shows, etc. Please look at those and choose the ones that are
appropriate to play on your show. Pretty soon we’ll have some year-end
fundraising promos and a whole lot of promos for holiday specials. Tags for
network promos are in the black box in the “Tags” section.
And, as always, we have the printed Programming Update, which is located on
the copy stand. There are written promos you can read there. Most of them
are for network and local talk and news shows, but there are music promos
there, too, for shows like KCBX in Concert, American Routes, and specials
for local shows, like Dulcie Taylor’s live-in-studio appearance on The Road
Home this week.
Thank you!
Marisa

I sometimes encounter the same situation.

Hi Marisa,
During my show, a pre-recorded show is running from the computer so
I can't play the promos. Is it possible to have a backup CD of all the
current show promos in the MCR, or is there a way to bypass the
pre-recorded show?
thanks!

Subject: [ONAIR] Host tips for on air promotion
Hi all! Here are some handy tips to help us all promote our programs
effectively:
When promoting shows, please mention the whole air window, e.g. “Listen
to The Evening Blues every Saturday night from 6:00 to 9:00,” rather than
just the start time, e.g. “…at 6:00.” Giving the whole window gives people
a bigger opportunity to tune in.
The most effective types of promotion, in order, are:
Forward promotion (what’s coming up within the next zero to 15
minutes—including music you’re about to play or a topic you’re about
to cover, or the next show) Vertical promotion (what’s coming up later
today) Horizontal promotion (what’s coming at this same time tomorrow)
Diagonal promotion (another show on a different day that has an
affinity to the show you’re hosting now, e.g. promoting The Broken
Spoke during The Road Home or vice-versa; or promoting Central Coast
Voices during Issues & Ideas or vice-versa)
Another type of promotion is when we’re promoting a special or a new
program heavily, or we’re doing a campaign across the schedule to bring
attention to a show. Then we ignore the rules above and just go for it in a
blitz (like we’ve done with Morning Edition and All Things Considered).
Happy promoting!
Marisa
