Odd, I was just yesterday reading (RUSH drummer) Neil Peart's account of his worst bike crash and it was similar to what you've described, gravel patch out of nowhere on an otherwise great stretch of asphalt. Last time I replaced my jacket, helmet and gloves was after leaned over in a tight corner, unable to detect gravel near the apex from a hidden driveway.
