* For stealing a purse containing one [gold] sovereign and two promissory notes , Margaret Kerr got “only six months”
* For operating illicit distilleries, many many distillers got 3, 4 months, or 6 months
* But James Henry, "for murder", was to be imprisoned [for just] one week ......
Does this mean the life of the murdered deceased (whose name wasn't recorded) wasn't worth much more than "a-bob-a-job" ..... ? While dodging the taxes and excise duties due on whiskey production was the biggest crime of all ... ?
Just asking mischievously on a Sunday afternoon!
Take care, guys
Warm regards
Dave Mitchell

Yes, Dave,
That's how it seems as I trawl through newspapers searching for reports from the courts and "acts of outrage" (as they were commonly termed). And horse stealing brought a mandatory sentence of death. I have found reports where rapes brought the perpetrators a paltry sentence of just four weeks (with hard labour). And the theft of a few potatoes, a handkerchief or a loaf of bread saw all those charged sentenced to transportation to the Australian colonies for periods of seven or fourteen years.
I am descended from an 18 y.o. convict found guilty of housebreaking in Liverpool, England in 1836 and the theft of household items and clothing valued at fifty pounds, for which he received a life sentence. It was the making of him and I can claim decent from Australian "royalty"!
There is great value in newspaper reports of court proceedings for Australian descendants of Irish convicts as all official court records were destroyed in the destruction of the old PRO, Dublin in 1922.
Yes, all good fun,
Len
