Hello,
I am trying to find information on the Royal Chelsea Hospital, such as the history of it, the branches or locations, the information recorded, and how I can access the records for it (especially during Covid). I have an ancestor (Andrew Quigley) from County Tyrone who may have been in the Royal Chelsea Hospital for some time.
I am also interested in finding out where his regiment may have traveled while he was with the army (the 7th battalion artillery, Royal Army) between 1801 and 1814.
Any ideas on where I can go to get this information would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Katherine Quigley
Katherine,
Most regiments kept a regimental diary in which they recorded where they were at any given time. Not all the regiment would necessarily be in the same place. It was common for a quarter to be kept at the base garrison for training and reserve purposes, so not every soldier in a regiment served in every campaign.
There are some basic details of soldiers military service on Ancestry and Findmypast but the records are not complete.
The full regimental and personal files are kept at the National Archives in Kew, London. Some basic military records are on-line but the full files and are in paper format, ie a personal visit is necessary to view them.

It’s important to try and identify the correct regiment. You have mentioned the Royal Army. That’s not a title normally used. (It would be the British Army). Did you perhaps mean the Royal Artillery? Was he in the R.A? Perhaps he served in the 7th battalion of the Royal Artillery.
The records for Chelsea Hospital (members are usually called Chelsea Pensioners) are also in Kew:

Dear Katherine,
You could have a look at the website of Naval and Military Press. They may have a book on the regiment and campaign. I found their site vey useful and their books informative.

Thank you Elwyn and Ellen. He did serve in the 7th battalion of the Royal
Artillery. Sorry I wasn't clear on that.
