When my Hyperstrada died, I went backwards in time. I've gone back to an
ST2, a bike that I have put over 250,000km on.
I ended up trading my dead Hyperstrada and $500 for a low mileage(20,000
miles)2003 ST2. As soon as I sat on it I knew it was the right choice.
The ST series are sporty, realtively comfy, great handling bikes that I
think work well as tourers. And low mileage STs seem to appear on a fairly
regular basis.
My $.02CDN worth!

I enjoyed my ST3 but of the 5 Ducati's I own/owned it was the most trouble. Once I got the Diavel, added the Shad Bags, Passenger Backrest, and Sargent seat I sold the ST3 and have been pretty happy. I admit it doesn't carve the turns quite as well as my M900 or the ST3 but that's okay I don't ride with my A game much anymore. - Gene
