I’ve done several track days at COTA on my 1098S, 1299S and Aprilia Tuono. I ride in the Advanced group so have pretty good pace.
The bumps are there, but nowhere near as bad as you’ll experience on a regular basis when riding on the street. These bumps really become as issue at extreme lean angles and speed that the MotoGP racers are achieving.
Unfortunately, Texas has horrible soil to build structures on. It moves quite significantly based upon moisture. COTA, when built, tried to lay down a very deep foundation to circumvent this, but it doesn’t appear to have worked.
Of the many tracks, I’ve ridden, throughout the USA, Eagles Canyon in TX is the only one that had bad enough bumps to actually feel dangerous at my pace. I believe it has been resurfaced lately.
So go have fun at COTA, ride your own pace, the track is wide and has plenty of paces for people to pass, so just enjoy your ride.

You’re not gonna make a career of it, and it ain’t your first rodeo:
a bunch of coaches & racers here at Summit Point++ won’t go on-track without their Hit-Air airbag vests.
My Alpinestars TechAir airbag judged me harshly & declined to deploy on tight, twisty, technical Shenandoah in July. A meat-grinder Intermediate rider T-boned me while I was coaching.

Mario, that generation of Ducati is an excellent track day tool. Light and not something that will over power you but enough to have fun. One thing to watch out for is the exhaust collector under the motor. Where the piped exit to the side and then head to the rear of the bike can be a clearance issue. If you hit it hard enough you can lift the rear wheel off the ground. Ask me how I know. 😱🏍 Fortunately after much excitement I did not go down but I got those pipes shortened right after that and added a shock from the next series SS which is about a half inch longer. You can see how little clearance there is in this photo.

Definitely some bumps, coming down the hill from turn 1 into 2 there were several that went down after hitting that bump not sure about other sections of the track.
There is another bump on the straight after turn 2 but it did not seem to be a problem, but then I'm just some old dude that did track days, so on a GP machine it also might be a problem. - Gene

During the broadcast on Motogp.com, I heard them say that if the track wasn’t fixed they wouldn’t be back. So for them to have it ready for April, they have to get going on the resurfacing in the not too distant future I would think. Fingers crossed. Gregg

I also have a buddy that highsided with an airbag suit (Alpinestars) at Loudon coming out of 12 spectacularly. His also did not deploy and was deemed defective by the manufacturer only AFTER they denied it and said the crash didn't meet their parameters. He sent them the sequence photos captured by the track photographer. They subsequently replaced the unit for free and apologized.
I just received my custom tailored Bison Vintage Rebirth suit and am very happy with it. I got the full perf/kangaroo suit for $1600 and the custom tailored gloves for another $300. I just couldn’t stretch to the extra cost of the airbag suit and airbag system. I was pricing them from Moto Liberty at COTA and Audrey (the owner) said a custom sized, airbag suit from RS Taichi would be about $5K. Too much for me. The Alpinestars rep told me that they plan on introducing a custom size program and he said he anticipates an custom sized airbag suit to come in around $2500 - 3K. Much better but still a tad too pricey.
You know this already, but it's worth saying - if they're faster, they'll get around you just fine without any worries!
Have fun - looking forward to the report.
Yes, I’m acutely aware of that due to my previously mentioned inauspicious racing career! hahaha

Thanks Chris! The only track I truly hated riding was Hallett in Oklahoma. That was bumpy and abrasive and ugly. Hated it.

- Gene

Raced once at Hallet in a 6 hour endurance race, Hallet felt like a velvet carpet compared to Eagles Canyon, though I must admit, I was riding a Kawasaki 250 at Hallet so my pace was a little different than my 1098 at EC.

Yes, I’m acutely aware of that due to my previously mentioned inauspicious racing career! hahaha
Chris:
Of the many tracks, I’ve ridden, throughout the USA, Eagles Canyon in TX is the only one that had bad enough bumps to actually feel dangerous at my pace. I believe it has been resurfaced lately.
So go have fun at COTA, ride your own pace, the track is wide and has plenty of paces for people to pass, so just enjoy your ride.
Thanks Chris! The only track I truly hated riding was Hallett in Oklahoma. That was bumpy and abrasive and ugly. Hated it.

Dainese D|Air covers no torso.
Once I recover, I might switch to tethered

Mario,
Have fun and be safe. That is always something that pretty much goes hand in hand. It may have been my road hugging weight that caused some of the issues. I am jealous you are getting to ride there but my track days are done. I no long bounce when I fall. I also demonstrated that crashing sucks and it does not get better with practice.

I'm tempted to stand up during the Rider's Meeting and say "hey guys, when you roll up on me, just go around, I'm your moving chicane for the weekend." I ride the twisties in the Hill Country as fast as I want to go and clearance is never an issue.
I'm at the point in my life now where I'm not out to prove anything. My only goal is to have fun and get that great pic of cresting Turn 10 with the Mullet (observation tower) in the background.

There is another bump on the straight after turn 2 but it did not seem to be a problem, but then I'm just some old dude that did track days, so on a GP machine it also might be a problem. - Gene

Hey - I'll be doing a 16-hour endurance race at Hallett this weekend, but
in a (former) Spec Miata.
I LOVE this track, especially when we reverse directions between Saturday
and Sunday - it's like two different venues in how it flows!
That said, the new pavement/layout at Eagles Canyon is sublime.
Of course, all my track time has been in cages for almost 20 years now,
minus a couple rider days.
After my last smash I''m a bit less excited about riding on the street
anymore and thinking about getting back to more regular track outings on a
bike again.
I think over the winter I'm gonna shine up the old Hawk GT rat for a new
campaign season...

I just received my custom tailored Bison Vintage Rebirth suit and am very
happy with it. I got the full perf/kangaroo suit for $1600 and the custom
tailored gloves for another $300. I just couldn’t stretch to the extra
cost of the airbag suit and airbag system. I was pricing them from Moto
Liberty at COTA and Audrey (the owner) said a custom sized, airbag suit
from RS Taichi would be about $5K. Too much for me. The Alpinestars rep
told me that they plan on introducing a custom size program and he said he
anticipates an custom sized airbag suit to come in around $2500 - 3K. Much
better but still a tad too pricey.
You know this already, but it's worth saying - if they're faster, they'll
get around you just fine without any worries!
Have fun - looking forward to the report.
Yes, I’m acutely aware of that due to my previously mentioned inauspicious
racing career! hahaha

Of the many tracks, I’ve ridden, throughout the USA, Eagles Canyon in TX
is the only one that had bad enough bumps to actually feel dangerous at my
pace. I believe it has been resurfaced lately.
So go have fun at COTA, ride your own pace, the track is wide and has
plenty of paces for people to pass, so just enjoy your ride.
Thanks Chris! The only track I truly hated riding was Hallett in Oklahoma.
That was bumpy and abrasive and ugly. Hated it.

I’ve done several track days at COTA on my 1098S, 1299S and Aprilia Tuono.
I ride in the Advanced group so have pretty good pace.
The bumps are there, but nowhere near as bad as you’ll experience on a
regular basis when riding on the street. These bumps really become as issue
at extreme lean angles and speed that the MotoGP racers are achieving.
Unfortunately, Texas has horrible soil to build structures on. It moves
quite significantly based upon moisture. COTA, when built, tried to lay
down a very deep foundation to circumvent this, but it doesn’t appear to
have worked.

Have fun and be safe. That is always something that pretty much goes hand
in hand. It may have been my road hugging weight that caused some of the
issues. I am jealous you are getting to ride there but my track days are
done. I no long bounce when I fall. I also demonstrated that crashing
sucks and it does not get better with practice.

Mario, that generation of Ducati is an excellent track day tool. Light
and not something that will over power you but enough to have fun. One
thing to watch out for is the exhaust collector under the motor. Where the
piped exit to the side and then head to the rear of the bike can be a
clearance issue. If you hit it hard enough you can lift the rear wheel off
the ground. Ask me how I know. 😱🏍 Fortunately after much excitement I
did not go down but I got those pipes shortened right after that and added
a shock from the next series SS which is about a half inch longer. You can
see how little clearance there is in this photo.

I heard them say that if the track wasn’t fixed they wouldn’t be back. So
for them to have it ready for April, they have to get going on the
resurfacing in the not too distant future I would think. Fingers crossed.

Side note, I bought and sold like 4 hawks over the years and still lust after one for some reason. Go figure.

Hey - I'll be doing a 16-hour endurance race at Hallett this weekend, but in a (former) Spec Miata.
I LOVE this track, especially when we reverse directions between Saturday and Sunday - it's like two different venues in how it flows!
That said, the new pavement/layout at Eagles Canyon is sublime.
Of course, all my track time has been in cages for almost 20 years now, minus a couple rider days.
After my last smash I''m a bit less excited about riding on the street anymore and thinking about getting back to more regular track outings on a bike again.
I think over the winter I'm gonna shine up the old Hawk GT rat for a new campaign season...

About bumps - I just remembered. There was a time when the seals on my
shocks failed on the Cagiva Alazzurra 650. It was like a pogo stick at the
back end. It was really exciting, but then I was not racing nor on track,
just fairly tight small roads in the hills of the San Francisco East Bay. I
learned how to let the bike do its own thing underneath me and stay loose.
