David's wife was Mary Ann Beattie, born 1789 in Fintona, so prior to 1800 records.
We don't know names of their parents or siblings.
David arrived in New York in 1811 but we can't find information on Mary Ann's arrival.
According to a family bible David and Mary Ann were married in April 1814 but we don't know location.
They had children in the U.S. (New York and Pennsylvania), and more were born when they arrived in Halton, Ontario, Canada around 1823. They were Presbyterian at that time, but possibly COI prior to that?
Mary Ann died in Halton in 1852; David died same place in 1875. They owned a farm and David also ran an inn called "Red Lion."
I'll look into PRONI to see if I can find anything else on Mary Ann in Donacavey and, hopefully, details of their marriage if they indeed tied the knot in Ireland.
Thank you again,Jacque

Jacque,
The problem you are up against is that so few Irish records exist for the 1700s. There’s no easy way round that. If David was born in Omagh, there are 9 churches in that parish. None has any records before 1801 and most start considerably later. If that’s where he’s from, you are not going to find a baptism record. It’s much the same in Co Armagh. There are very few pre 1800 records in Armagh.
You say David’s wife was from Fintona (which is in the parish of Donacavey). The Church of Ireland there has birth & marriage records from 1800. The other denominations’ records all start much later. If she was COI and married there - as tradition dictated - then you might get lucky if it was after 1800, but otherwise there’s probably no record of her to find either.
The Donacavey COI records don’t appear to be on-line anywhere (according to the Church of Ireland guide) but there is a copy in PRONI in Belfast. The parish has the originals but there is normally a fee for accessing them there.

Darlene, yes, I'm very confused. Family legend has it that our gg-grandfather, David Lindsay, was born in Armagh approx. . 1780, but his death record shows Tyrone. Perhaps his Irish accent wasn't easily understood by his North American descendants.
As you suggested, Omagh could be correct location. His wife was born in Fintona, so it seems very possible. I've been searching for his records in the area of Omagh for a year, but with no real leads.
My ancestors don't seem to have been involved with workhouses but they're a fascinating bit of history which is why I read Elwyn's input with much interest.

Jacque,
There’s nowhere in Tyrone called Armagh.
Each workhouse (Poor Law Union) had a catchment area which, in general, was the same as the later civil registration districts. The Poor Law catchment areas often crossed county boundaries. In the case of the Armagh (city) most of the townlands in that Poor Law Union were in Co Armagh, but there look to be about 30 in Co Tyrone. When they were sorting the boundaries out, I assume there was some system, and in this case it was decided to lump them in with Armagh City. So persons in those 30 Tyrone townlands who needed indoor relief from the workhouse went to Armagh City (and would therefore appear in their records).
Strabane has part of Co Donegal in its area, Irvinestown, Fermanagh, includes a chunk of Tyrone too. And so on.
Use this site if you want to establish which county, parish or Poor Law Union a townland fell in.

Just a quick question about workhouses.
You wrote locations of workhouses in Tyrone in a previous email:
In Tyrone: Armagh, Castlederg, Clogher, Cookstown, Dungannon, Enniskillen, Gortin (closed around the late 1870s), Lowtherstown (renamed Irvinestown c 1880), Omagh & Strabane.
Was there a place in Tyrone called "Armagh" or did people on the border travel to Co. Armagh to the workhouse?

Workhouseboundaries often crossed county boundaries and in the case of Tyrone& Fermanagh, both Enniskillen and Irvinestown (originally namedLowtherstown) cover parts of both Tyrone & Fermanagh. Which couldlead to a "Tyrone & Fermanagh" reference. If you haveno other clues they may be the 2 to start with.
Butif Ellen died in 1864, there should be a statutory death certificatefor her. There was only 1 Ellen Quigley death in what is now NorthernIreland in 1864, and that was a child aged 0 who died in Londonderryon 9.1.1864. So I'd be keen to know the source of the informationthat says your Ellen died in 1864 in Tyrone/Fermanagh.
