Hello All,
I'm hoping that someone will find something interesting here...............
Len Swindley, Melbourne, Australia
Londonderry Journal January 24 1849
On the evening of the 15th instant, as a man named William Loughlin, of the townland of Draughton, near Fintona, was returning from the fair of Trillick, and after having proceeded 200 yards from that town he suddenly fell down and expired. An inquest was held on the body on the following day, before William Orr Esq., Coroner, and a respectable jury, when a verdict of “Died by the visitation of God”, was returned.
On the same day, while a man name Cassidy, from Glenflesk, near Fintona, was riding a horse through the fair of Trillick, the animal stumbled, when Cassidy was thrown to the ground, and had his collar-bone broken; he is, however, in a fair way of doing well.

It is interesting Len.
Not sure what the lesson of this is....beware of Fairs?
But I do think the science of medicine would have a different explanation
for Mr. Loughlin's family.
I wonder who the "Correspondent" was?
All the best,
Valerie

Hello Valerie and All,
Fairs were greatly anticipated events by all, whether monthly, quarterly or annually and offered a relief from the dreariness of everyday rural life. Markets were held generally on a weekly basis, but it was the fair that brought great excitement. It was a venue for farmers to sell their stock and produce and villagers and townsfolk the opportunity of purchasing goods from travellers who moved from fair to fair, setting up their stalls to retail specialised items. Prominent amongst the stallholders were emigration agents spruiking the benefits of emigration to North America, Australia and New Zealand. And of course, Ulster being Ulster, there were numerous drinking booths in addition to the many bars in close proximity to the square (or “Diamond” as they are known in Plantation towns.) After liberally imbibing, such days were occasions when quarrels were settled either on the spot or on the journey homewards which were reported frequently in the press with occasional, sad tragic outcomes.
As regards “ a Correspondent”, it could perhaps be an M.D., clergyman, schoolteacher or a known credible resident who simply took pen to paper and submitted the report to the editor (by post).
All the best,
Len Swindley, Melbourne, Australia

Thank you, Len, for that very colourful description of life in rural Ulster. I also learned a new word: “spruiking.”
All your contributions are much appreciated!
Best wishes,
