As Len Swindley has mentioned, most Australian newspapers are accessible on the NLA's Trove website. This is a marvellous free resource that many of us use just about every day. However, be aware that due to copyright laws, most newspapers are digitised to 1955 only. There are some exceptions, eg, Canberra Times and Woman's Weekly and government gazettes are available for much longer periods -- probably to the early 1990s.

Electoral rolls are also free, but not that simple to access. Selected years are available at the NLA and at all state libraries. However, I don't think they are available online (so you have to go there in person), and recent years are not publicly available. With an Ancestry subscription, selected years in the range 1903 to 1980 are available online there.

Lindsay,

as you have mentioned, Electoral rolls are not all on line,
but you can access the 1870/71, 1878/79 and 1903 rolls free on line at “Internet history Resources” ( ihr.com.au ).
There are also Directories 1858/1859 to 1930 and some land records to view.

The National Library is a great and free resource. I have used it from time
to time. TROVE newspapers particularly - not just Aussie papers either.
There are also free BDM records, the NLA e-facilities are quite

As Len Swindley has mentioned, most Australian newspapers are accessible on the NLA's Trove website. This is a marvellous free resource that many of us use just about every day. However, be aware that due to copyright laws, most newspapers are digitised to 1955 only. There are some exceptions, eg, Canberra Times and Woman's Weekly and government gazettes are available for much longer periods -- probably to the early 1990s.

Electoral rolls are also free, but not that simple to access. Selected years are available at the NLA and at all state libraries. However, I don't think they are available online (so you have to go there in person), and recent years are not publicly available. With an Ancestry subscription, selected years in the range 1903 to 1980 are available online there.

As Len Swindley has mentioned, most Australian newspapers are accessible
on the NLA's Trove website. This is a marvellous free resource that many
of us use just about every day. However, be aware that due to copyright
laws, most newspapers are digitised to 1955 only. There are some
exceptions, eg, Canberra Times and Woman's Weekly and government gazettes
are available for much longer periods -- probably to the early 1990s.

Electoral rolls are also free, but not that simple to access. Selected
years are available at the NLA and at all state libraries. However, I
don't think they are available online (so you have to go there in person),
and recent years are not publicly available. With an Ancestry
subscription, selected years in the range 1903 to 1980 are available online
there.
