Hello listers!
Any advice or guidance would be VERY much appreciated...
William and Sarah Adams lived in Omagh, Co. Tyrone, and left via
Londonderry for North America in early 1823 with their children (I think
there were 6 children). Sadly, both William and Sarah died at sea, leaving
their children to finish the trip and eventually settle in Prince Edward
County, Ontario, Canada.
I have traced the family to current times, but have not been able to
determine where in Omagh the family started out from. Any suggestions to
determine addresses, parish, church, etc. Would be appreciated.
I visited Omagh 3 years ago, and found only one cemetary that had Adams'
burials, but dont know if they are related.
Any ideas as to where I could check?
Hullo Darlene,
One hint I was given is that possibly your family came from a townland in the vicinity of Omagh.
Apparently when people left the Old Country they often listed the nearest postal town as being where they were from
because they actually came from a small townland within that area. I would widen your search and get a good
map e.g. Philips Street Atlas Co. Tyrone/Co. Fermanagh. There are lots of Adams entries on https://cotyrone.com
Happy hunting,

If you haven’t already, I would try to gather any and all records on the surviving children that came over like marriage records, death certificates, obits, baptisms of children, etc. A town might be listed on one of those. It’s possible even one of their children’s death certificates or marriage records listed a town of origin for their parents if that information was asked at the time. Most might just say “Ireland” or the county but you never know! I’ve always found information like that in the most unexpected of places. Best of luck!

Hello Darlene,
Sadly, I venture to say that it is most unlikely that you will locate any confirmatory records of your forebears in Co. Tyrone; without the name of William’s father it will be impossible to locate a possible entry in the tithe applotment books or an inscription on a headstone. The stated location of Omagh as the Adams’ native place is problematical; it was always the closest post town that was recorded in shipping records as this would be the location of the emigration agent. Many emigrants signed up for a passage at the town’s Fair Day when the agent would have been busy spruiking the benefits of emigration. I found the following entry on Geni.com…………..
Notes for William Adams:
William was originally from Omagh, County Tyrone, in northern Ireland. With his wife and six children he sailed from Londonderry about 1822-1825, hoping to start a new life in Canada. Their ship, like many others hauling immigrants at the time, was small, overcrowded, and disease ridden. Some of these ships were considered worse than those engaged in the African Slave Trade. Both William and his wife Sarah became victims, and were buried at sea. The voyage took 9 weeks. It is unknown by what means, but the surviving family finally settled in Ameliasburgh and Hillier Townships of Prince Edward County, Ontario. There were on Lot 83, later known as the W. H. Kinnear farm, for a time.
Reading through the post, it seems that quite a deal of information is known of the ship and voyage: do you know the name of the ship? Such a disaster would have been reported in a Canadian newspaper or maritime investigation?
You mention locating just one graveyard with known Adams headstones; I guess this was at Cappagh Church of Ireland, where there are several?
Sorry for the negative news,
