Good morning. My name is Lester Long and my great grandfather was Richard Davis who married Martha McGonigle in St Columbs cathedral in 1899. Richard was my mothers grandfather. He was from Tyrone in the Donemana area . His wedding certificate says his father was Richard Davis also. My mother told me that a brother or cousin or perhaps another relation of Richard was a sexton at the Earl Gift church . For a number of years I have been trying to find my Davis Tyrone connection with no success. I know the name Davis does exist in the Donemana area . I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on the sexton of Earls Gift Church connection. The other strange entry on Richard and Martha wedding certificate is that Richard Davis was resident in Scullion. In the 1901 census Richard is stated as born in Co Tyrone . I am very familiar with the Townlands of that area but can find no suggestion of any area yet alone a Townland called Scullion. Can anyone be of assistance. Lester Long
Lester,
Earlsgift is an alternative name for Donagheady St James church. You could write to the current Rector and enquire whether he has any knowledge of a Davis Sexton there in the late 1800s/early 1900s. They may have records.

I did notice a Davis who was a Church of Ireland Minister in Dromore, Tyrone in 1901. No idea if that’s a family connection:

Hi Lester,
In the 1860s there was a SCULLION family living in Killycurry who married in Earl's Gift so maybe someone entered information in the wrong box.

There is a Ballyscullion parish in Co. Londonderry.

it ?

Lester:
I have referred to the Donagheady vestry book and am unable to locate a reference to the appointment of your relation as a sexton....
1876 Richard Heaslip appointed as sexton, replaced by R. McGonigle in 1886, who in turn was succeeded by James Monteith in 1890; he is recorded still acting in this role in 1920-1.
I am unable to locate a record of the birth of a Richard Davis in either Cos. Tyrone or Londonderry Welcome to Irish Genealogy - Irish Genealogyhttps://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/
